Hi All,

I'm in the market for some 2nd hand shocks 140mm, for around £200.

I've seen a couple 2nd hand

2008 or 2008 uturn Rock Shox Pike's or
2009 Rock Shox Revelations

Both certainly appear to be in good nick, or so the respective sellers claims anyway. I don't know if they are coil or air, and don't know if I really bothered either way about that. I just need new shocks for around £200, and these I think maybe fit the bill.

I've read some reviews and both seem to do quite well, bit unsure if there is a big difference between them - do any of you have any advice on either? Do you think they are good value at that price?

Thanks for any pointers!

Dave

Pikes are superb, very smooth, plush yet bombproof, i love mine. Fairly heavy but it's worth it IMO. 426 coil u-turn btw.

Pikes are a stronger heavier fork - IIRC with a maxle 20 mm. Revelations are a lighter not so strong fork with a 9mm QR (usually)

09 Revs used the Pike lowers anyway, so there's bugger all to choose between them AFAIK. Choose which ones have the best colour to match your bike. 😀

More seriously, have either been serviced, do you 'need' U-Turn, etc.?

Freeborn have a pair of excellent condition second hand Pike 454s in their shop for £190. They will have been serviced by the shop and they should look after you for a while afterwards if everything goes wrong.
They really are in excellent condition.

Given the choice it's Pikes every time. I own 3 sets of Pikes and a set of 2010 Revelations too. Although the Revelations are very light, they're noticeably less stiff and assured than Pikes.

As for my Pikes, I've a coil set and two Airs. I prefer the adjustability of the Airs over the coils, although some prefer the plusher spring. Home servicing for Revelations and Pikes is relatively easy too.

Hmm... most Pikes are overpriced. £200 is way too much IMHO, considering that they've been OEM only since 2010 and are now discontinued. Having said that, if they've been to TF Tuned just before sale then go for it.

[ninja edit] Those Freeborn Pike 454s above would be ideal.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I don't even know what u-turn is..., i was just browsing the classifieds for 140s for around £200. I'm not sure if £200 is a fair price to pay for second hand forks, seems quite a lot cash to me, not wanting anything too flash, just reliable.

Pike are these ones.

U-Turn is the travel adjust, which will set your Pikes anywhere between 95-140mm travel (coil) and 110-140mm (Air) or if you have 2010 Revelations 120-150mm.

It's a very reliable system, all my Rockshox forks have it. The only weak spot with Pikes (and indeed all 32mm Rockshox forks) is the seals in the compression damper which can occasionally leak, necessitating a rebuild. TF Tuned used a modified seal IIRC.

I'd rather have a £200 set of Rockshox than a £400 set of Foxes, I'm not a good enough rider to notice the difference in damping quality but I sure as heck will appreciate the stiffness.

The 09 maxle Revelation is a sort of heavyweight Revelation or lightweight Pike, as Rickos says the lowers are the same.

Pikes are tougher but in all honesty, I bet 9/10 people with Pikes would be absolutely fine on Revs. I used to have a set of QR 130mm Revelations and obviously they're less stiff, but still very capable (and IMO almost exactly as stiff as a Fox 32 with a QR15)

The newest Revelations (2010 onwards) are on a different chassis and a wee bit lighter and flexier, but still strong enough for almost everyone I reckon.

The 09 Revelations are well worth seeking out...as near as dammit as stiff as a Pike but not as expensive.

Another thing to consider if your new to all of this is the length of the steerer - make sure its long enough to fit your headtube and stem combo.

Something else to watch with the u-turn revelations is the clunk and drop. Mine did it 2 months after fitting. basically riding down around 150mm extension, hit large bump, shock goes "clunk" and sinks completely into its travel. Will pump back up, but wont go beyond 120mm.

Phone call to TFTune, yup very common issue with them and fixed under warranty. Googled around and did find a few similar stories.

Since repair haven't had an issue, and have had a complete battering so cant fault whatever the repair involved, but just a heads up that it may happen at some point.

Was that one of the very early ones? There was a big ****-up with the first run, should never have made it out to the shops really but I've never heard of it happening with any of the later ones.

Pikes are ace.

Coil 454's here lightest of the coil lot, I think. Coil 409's weigh a ton by the way. I'd avoid them.
