Its a bike for his birthday in May. He isnt having it yet, we were setting it up so the bars and saddle etc were all ready to go on the day.

Doesn't that mean you've got another few weeks yet? I can see it's frustrating but best thing, as suggested, would be to buy the right one and fit it and tell the seller that you'd just like the cost of the part. If he's ordering it in, he'll be able to send it back too.

I did suggest that to him as i confirmed with Edinburgh bikes they have it in stock and he said no because his is a special order from ATB and can't be returned ??

Given the supply chain is shop - UK distributor - Formula in Italy - UK distributor - shop, that plus any delays in comms between you and the seller and the seller and the shop, plus several postal services, it could easily take two weeks and likely more.

Yep.... and that's missing out shipping from Taiwan...(if that turns out to be necessary)

The seller will probably have gone the official route but the same freewheel might well be used on many other makes of rebranded hubs.

Without the actual product number it can be a nightmare ... I know my "Giant hubs" have two different sets of internals dependent on year/month and that is for a wheelset sold as a wheelset. They look identical externally but the freewheel is completely different.

Given the OP has a birthday deadline I personally would be buying a used wheel (its a 27.5 ....) and can always sell that for postage costs when the new freehub finally arrives.

I'm with the OP. Bike sold was not fit, the seller has a responsibility. Especially as he works in a bike shop, he should have spotted the problem and either sorted it or described it.

YOU order it online from EB, if his comes within 28 days, send that back to EB for a refund, if it doesn't you have a spare.

Which all sounds reasonable enough. I can understand you getting mardy if he'd told you to jog on, but he sounds like a decent seller to me. If you'd bought it new and the freehub had failed under warranty, you most likely would be facing exactly the same wait.

Can't help thinking you are writing this in the wrong place...
I'd be writing a ebay message to the seller

I'd avoid emotive language and simply say "I have contacted ATB and they have informed me the WHYFHUB06 is in stock and can be dispatched same day if ordered before 2PM, please can you confirm when you expect I will receive the replacement as agreed in your earlier message (below)"

renton - FWIW i see it from your point of view that if he admitted he knew the freehub was a problem and promised to order you a new one then he should have but after 2 weeks and no new freehub i think its fair to say that he's pulled a fast one on you or was simply paying you lip service to get you off his back...just buy a replacement or if cheaper buy a replacement (second hand) wheel

There are no cheap freehubs for it. It requires a specific Formula model around £25

Gosh, that's cheap.

This is like watching a wasp land on a thistle. Someone's getting stung and it doesn't matter who.

He should just buy a new freehub instead of crying about it like a toddler 8)

The bike shop at Manchester Velodrome is an Evans
The seller will be almost certainly ordering this through his employee account at trade.
This would be a 'special purchase' as it's not a stock item for Evans. This is done through a specific person / department at Evans HQ. Pretty much out of the hands of the employee other than harrasing a colleague 200 miles away.
This would be why it's taking longer than just ordering from Edinburgh Cyces etc. who have it in stock.
Armed with this information, I'd suggest to the seller that you both pay £12.50 each and get the freehub asap from EBC etc or just accept this as 'one of those things..it's a second hand bike'. If it were a cracked frame or something hugely expensive, I would not employ the same pragmatic attitude.
Seller appears to be a very decent chap.

Monksie.

Evans order direct from ATB who have it sat on a shelf in stock ready for overnight delivery. Even if you say as above it still shouldn't take 2 weeks.

Re: seller bing a nice guy with good comms................

Well in that case why not just sort it out with him? Why do you feel the need to 'out' the guy, posting where he works etc?

Imagine if somebody you ripped off (even though you didn't mean to) did that?

Hence, karma.

Suck it up buttercup. I mean, £25 ffffSSSS! You owe us all on here several hours of wasted lives we'll never get back thanks to your posting twaddle infinitum over the years.

Woooooah guys.

I'm not sure going all teenage mutant ninja turtle on Renton is needed. OK, so many of us think he should just get on with it, me included, but lets keep it sane in here hey.

I bought a frame that was supposed to come with a Hope headset. Unfortunately some bits were missing from headset as was the mech hanger.

Frame was mint so thought I'd suck it up and bought another headset and hanger from lbs. Bike was built in 24hrs and I now have a spare hanger and headset as the seller sorted the bits out after a quick email.

True story - life's too short.

Communication has been good so far and he did apologize.

that's all well and good but if you know the wholesaler has it in stock and the seller has said he'll get one then he should do just that.

I can understand your frustration when someone says they'll do something and then don't but for the sake of £25 the hassle just isn't worth my time when I could be out riding, decorating or I could always change yet more batteries in the kids chuffing toys......why?????!!!!???? Why does everything need an 'effing battery?????!!!!!??????

But's that's another story for another day on possibly a different forum.

That delay is normal if he is indeed ordering from Evans. Special orders have to go through the buyers at head office and they will only order when they have enough to create a decent order with the supplier. Otherwise a £25 freehub ends up costing £5 postage from supplier then another £5 to post to store so they would end up making nothing on it. Id say the lad is being honest and probably also frustrated that he can't get the parts quickly. ATB won't ship directly to a single evans store.

I'd either wait it out or just talk to the buyer and maybe try split the cost. Probably the quickest and easiest way for both of you to resolve the issue quickly.

Communication has been good to be fair which is why Im asking how long would a freehub take from ATB sales?

Could be any number of factors influencing the delay, but if the part is in stock, ATB are very efficient usually so would be next day, 2 days max.

However... As an independent, me ordering a £25 freehub on its own is at my discretion. A young lad working for a chain store may have various hoops to jump through.

May I suggest, and I know there's going to be a number of people on here who agree with me, feel free to give me a call at work (or drop me an email) in future, if there's anything I can do to help I'd be happy to. Would save a fair bit of internet derived confusion by the sounds of things!

FWIW I don't think you're having your pants pulled down, sometimes these things do take bit longer than anticipated for one reason or another. If the seller starts coming out with all the excuses under the sun, that's when I'd raise an issue with PayPal to get my £25 back, and armed with the part number, speak to another Whyte dealer and get them to order the part for you asap... Oh and I'd pay the £5 for next day delivery guaranteed too just for piece of mind!
