Hey guys, ok so I want to spend £2kish on a hardtail. I'm not really the most daring rider so I normally stick to less technical, fast & flowy type stuff. I've been looking at a few different options and wondered what your guys opinions & suggestions were, so far I've been looking at:

Stif Morf
Orange P7 Pro
Orange Crush Pro
Chromag Wideangle X1
Last Bikes Fastforward V2

Out of all them i'm probably most attracted to the Morf, if only because I remember travelling to their store in Headingley when I was about 11 and gazing at all the Santa Cruz's but as there's a lack of review out there I have no idea whether it's good bike!

These are all quite beefy for less technical riding. Do you need a long-forked hardtail or will a lighter more xc hardtail be better suited?

Anyway - if you are a medium - terrahawk has the magazine test wideangle in the classifieds right now.

Surely a Cotic Soul needs to be added to that list, which otherwise sees me recommend the P7 for needs as described.

Surely a Cotic Soul needs to be added to that list, which otherwise sees me recommend the P7 for needs as described - if only for the likelihood that re-sale of either could be a lot more straightforward than for the Morf?

It should be noted that I typically ride mid 90's mountain bikes (for no other than nostalgia reasons) hence my general ignorance about modern MTB's & their geometry!

Yak - a shorter forked hardtail may be suitable, do you have any recommendations and I'll have a look.

Thanks guys

I'd add the Sonder Transmitter to your list for no other reason that I have one and it's a fast and capable bike. For that money you could get this bike

I've been on 29ers since they came out. Never ridden a 27.5 so can't recommend any! But I am drawn to the Ritchey 650b and that would be top of my list to demo if I was in a similar position.

Sounds like the morf is a great bike!

Got to be hard to look past a soul though?

Surely with those requirements your list should be 29er race bikes not 650b agro hardtails?

Trek Superfly,
Canyon Exceed,
BMC Teamelite,
Scott Scale,
Specialized Epic HT

Another for the Stanton range. A Sherpa or Slackline would be ideal for what you have described.

Cotic.co.uk

Have a good look at the range, lots of options. Maybe try and get on one of their demo weekends. You should get a vsry nice bike for less than £2k

I went straight from mid 90s to a whyte 901 and didnt really like it (admittedly i got suked into the media hype espite it not being ideal for the type of xc and xc racing I like).

Based on that and on your admission to to be after something focussed on less technical terain, i can go with te tried and tested 'recommend what you have' approach 😆

Scott Scale 650b flavour, at whatever level you can find a good deal on now 2017 bikes are coming out. Great bikes, not super twitchy and more than capable for trail centre and xc riding

Extremely happy P7 owner here. It's such a long, slack, low and generally capable bike that it would be a bit wasted if you don't want to ride techy/steep/rough stuff. Having said that, it still makes a great bike for general all-day riding. Crush is very nice too, but I like the lower bb of the P7 (not sure how much difference the steel makes).

I have had a Last FastForward V2 frame on order since July, they are running behind schedule so won't be shipped out to customers until Mid January, just in case you were wanting a bike before crimbo.

I recently bought a used Wideangle frame, put 160mm Pikes on it, it came with an Angleset headset to slacken the front end up.

Anyhow, I do like it and don't regret buying it.

Have removed the Angleset headset and fitted a conventional headset. Just about to change the air shaft on the Pikes to 140mm.

Nice frame, builds up into any configuration ( currently set up as 2 x 10), threaded bb, 142mm rear spacing, well recommended.

For the type of riding your describing I'd consider Cotic or Stanton (Sherpa owner here) also the Orange Evo at £1700 or the Kona Explosif is lovely or you could build up a nice Singular Swift for that money.
