[#11084164]

So thinking of getting a hardtail

Requirements are as follows

2k to 2.5k max (2k if paying cash, 2.5k if using cyclescheme)

Would prefer a Carbon or Ti frame with stealth routing for dropper post
12 speed sram GX groupset
good set of 29er wheels
Good set of suspension forks like fox or Rockshox
should weigh in around 10kg or less

What do you recommend/suggest

These tend to have good reviews, a few choices there too.

Cheers Ive already looked at the Sonder Signal Ti and it almost ticks all the boxes apart from the weight im afraid, id be looking at a large which is 13.8kg!

Also been tempted by a Canyon Exceed CF SL 8.0!!

Scale is clearly the logical answer

Its light and comfy with modern (for an XC race bike) geometry. Tire clearance at the back could be better though.

Well 10kg is very light for a 29er.

22lbs in old money.

Good luck, maybe you can find a race XC bike with a big discount and do a bit of weenie-ing on it yourself.

One assumes that you have a bike in mind? or are we searching for holy grail here?

Canyon Exceed CF SL 7.0 seems to fit

Edit. You’ve already mentioned the 8.0 😁

You need to specify what type of riding you will be doing.

I did already post a link right above your first post to one that matches my requirements

Yep the 8.0 exceeds my choice of spec and only just exceeds my cycle scheme max budget by £29!

This is my first choice just wondering it can be bettered

You need to specify what type of riding you will be doing.

Typical hardtail riding, fire road, XC, some light trail use

Couple of ideas at the top of your budget.

Cheers will take a look at those in a bit

So you did. Happy to be corrected.

Here is another option, lighter apparently...

Okay, so 27.5 rather than 29er, but mega spec and completely unridden.

Bit biased as it's mine. I built it over Christmas because I was bored and hadn't built a bike for a while. I then buggered off to Madeira for the winter and bought a new Canyon Strive CF to ride out here. I have no real need for the Lynskey as I will fly my Canyon home when I get bored of sunshine and perfect trails

Get the Signal Ti and change the wheels. Isn’t most of the excess weight in them?

Modern frames are pretty equal in geo and build quality nowadays. So I would go for a cheap frame like the Nukeproof Scout and build everything around it to fit your budget. Dream spec for me would be Fox 34s, XT 1x12, Hope brakes, Renthal cockpit and my own built wheels made up of Stans Flows, Pro4 hubs and Sapim spokes (28 lite front, 32 race out the back).

Say what? Is that really where people ride hardtails? Sounds like gravel or rigid bike territory. So you’re looking for an XC bike then OP?

I’ve pretty much always ridden hardtails, but never looked at weight as I’ve mainly gone steel so expected chunky yet reassuringly robust. Also ride them anywhere I’d ride a full sus. Just slower and scarier 😀

How about carbon XC options from the Specialized and Trek?

Transition Vanquish would be my choice but you'd probably have to buy frame and build it up.

Wrong wheel size and 2nd hand so thats a no go, want brand new with 29in wheels

The Signal Ti is 4kg heavier, no way to lose that by replacing the wheels

Serious answer, epic hardtail. Even under budget so you can upgrade gears.

Did consider the Epic (have a Specialized Levo Expert e mtb already) but i would rather not have another Specialized, not sure why as the Levo is great but fancy something different

Have a gravel bike, gravel bikes are fine for gravel paths and the occasional man made trail etc... want something that can do that but also be able to handle off piste/natural trails along with long Southdown way rides, winter riding, bit of an all rounder rather than a single purpose bike

Not keen on getting a Specialized (see stupid reason above) did look at the Trek Procaliber 9.7 but groupset is NX

Transition Vanquish would be my choice but you’d probably have to buy frame and build it up.

A friend works for Transition's UK distro, Ive had a Scout , Patrol and a TR500 at very good prices so they were my first port of call but alas they no longer make the Vanquish

So far nothing seems to beat the Canyon Exceed CF SL 8.0 and i prefer the look of it to any of the others Ive seen so far

Frame in large is just over 2kg and Sonder will custom build. Get a light weight fork, decent wheels (stock set is around 2.5kg) and finish kit spec’d. That or go on a diet 😉

Problem with that is you still have no idea of weight till the bike arrives and you have already paid for it, As for going on a diet, that is already in progress, the hardtail is a treat to keep me motivated and give me more riding options so i dont get bored of too much bike exercise

Looks like ill be going for the Canyon Exceed CF SL 8.0
