Been racing on one whippet which is fairly light

That'll depend what you have your Whippet built with and what you build your 29er with...

I have a Dirty Harry that comes in at 9kg (20lbs) - it's a fast bike! Not sure what you're Whippet weighs, but the Dirty Harry frame is about 1250g ( heavier than claimed if I remember correctly)
