OK, I am on the verge of taking the plunge into the world of 29ers.

On One do a very well priced option of wheels and tyres but I'm worried they'd be a bit heavy. I'm after a lightish set of wheels for XC.... any recommendations? I don't want to spend a fortune so it looks like Hope 2 etc are out of the window as an option.

Tyres... I mainly ride at Thetford. Folders definitely but I can't go spending silly money at the moment... any suggestions?

Bonty ACX good all-round tyre. Racing Raplhs very fast and brill as 2.4 up front if running rigid, but not so good in uk mud.

Light, cheap 29er wheels - are you mad!?
Halo Freedom wheelset (ctbm does them) are ok.

Chevin Cycles have the AXC for £40 a pair.

for cheap wheels, I'd be looking at the Bontrager line. I've had Rhythm Comps (<£200 a pair), now moved onto Rhythm Elites (£276 for Swinnerton). I'm running the elites tubeless.

I've just taken the plunge into the world of 29erdom and I concur with clink light cheap 29er wheels are non existent, except for the On One wheels which look very good but are a bit heavy - incidentally I have a brand new unused pair of On One Wheels + Shimano rotors for sale if you're interested.

Anyone tried a Geax Sagauro 29ers? Looking for an all condition tyre (I like Bonty ACX's and had them on my 26er just sounding out alternatives.

The Geax is a dry weather tyre.

maxxis ardent is a nice front tyre (i've a carver - 26" rear), ghetto tubelesses well. i ended up building my own front wheel, using a dt swiss x 470, but its not as light as bonty wheels - so i'd second bonty

btw 69er is a very good compromise. light enough to race but very good fun to ride also and copes well with nadgery stuff.

I have used the ACX on a 69er, and it's fine - bear in mind you'll get a lot more grip with a 29er wheel (I don't know why - it just sticks well!). I'm currently running a Kenda Nevegal, which is even better.

I'm probably going to have a bit of a clearout at some point next week, so PM me if you would be interested in either of those tyres or a cheap 29er front wheel (Deore / WTB) - I'll probably be getting rid.

I really like the racing ralphs for more summer riding and use kenda navegals in the winter.
I have the one one wheels and they are OK, but my rear hub has now died after what I consider to be too short a period of time so I have made a final decision not to buy any more on-one wheels, that is the second dissapointment I've had with them.
I have been considering the XT ones at CRC but I am a bit broke at the moment so just using the road bike until I decide what to do.
For the price though, the on-ones were a great way to get the bike running, i just wish they had lasted longer.

oddjob - what happened to the On-One wheels? I am in the process of replacing the bearings in the freehub of my On-One rear wheel which I am hoping will sort out the issues I have been having with mine

Shimano has put out a 29er specific group - I think it's the Deore or XT one - but that's worth looking into . Something about torque being an issue on rear hubs with the bigger 29er-compatible cassettes, which might be one reason why the On-One ones gave up the ghost. There's a bit of an explanation here, at BM.

I have a set of Sun Ringle Chargers on my Full Suss 29er and a set of Bonty Race Lites on my 29er Hardtail (and now a spare set of Spesh wheels that came on my Rockhopper 29er). I have a selection of tyres - spesh the Captain (very happy with), Small Block 8's, Nevegals, Mud X and Panaracer Rampage. I prefer the wider tyres really but then i've never been able to tell massive differences between different tyres (apart from mud specific).
CRC have some good deals on Sun Ringle 29er wheels at the moment but again, the cheaper ones are not light. My set costs over £400 new but i got them off here for £200 posted (unused) so i was very happy with that. The rear version is currently half price on there for £150. The Bonty's were from here as well, £140 for the pair so again no complaints (they were near as dammit unused as well).
Plenty available on the classifieds if you are prepared to wait/get lucky. There was a set of The Captain tyres on here last night for £25 posted - 50 miles use. I nearly bought them myself but i don't really need any more at the moment.

What about some DT Swiss 470 rims on some XT hubs. Stif has the rims on offer at the moment.

I'm having nice times with my ACX(f)& Small Block(R) on my 29er.ACX has good grip & the small block rolls along very well, didn't rate it as a front tyre tho......

Another vote for the ACX (bought off of Chevin Cycles @ 2 for £35 !!!) running them on Halo Freedom wheels and very happy although i would say not the lightest of set-ups. Until i split the side wall of a Spesh Captain i had that on the back and the ACX up front during the summer which seemed to roll quickly. Was tempted by some small block8's just before D2D but glad i didn't bother as the ACX's were great in the sand 😛
