how do you know what type of tyre you need for mtb riding, im on a full ridgid bike so i thought someting like a 2.4 front and back im quite heavy, dont ride in mud much and want some thing that rolls easily.
I generally ride fully rigid SS on the malverns.
Summer boots are usually either 2.4 RR on the front and ignitors on the rear, or SB8s front and back.
Winter wear is Stouts on front and ignitor rear.
Welsh trips will usually be ignitor front and back, or if wet and rooty, then I might put a Stout on the front instead.
Ignitors are great all rounders, RRs are lovely when it's not muddy.
I'm normally use Maxxis but I've been very impressed with my Specialized Captains on the 29er. They're reasonably priced too.
Schwalbe Hans Dampf is my new fave front winter tyre (and Candodavid on here). Trailstar is possibly too grippy! For faster rolling 2.4 Ardent is brill, but not great in mud. Have enjoyed 2.35 Nobby Nic not in current mud. Racing Ralph 2.4 is great summer tyre up front.
I love Aspen out back in summer - but some find it too fragile.
Conti Race Kings in 2.2 - come up quite big, roll really well and are usually quite cheap. Have these on my fully ridgid (Gryphon)
Spooky ...I have just ordered a pair of Hans Dampf this morning .!!!
๐ Trail or Pace?
Pacestar
I like my ardent 2.4s in the summer, the beavers in the winter (2.2 I think) and 2.5" dissent behemoths for the alps.
But overall, really like the ardents.

i'm looking forward to the release of the 2.5 minion.
Bontrager xr4 up front (BIG on a P35) and an Ardent 2.25 out back.
big_scot_nanny ...I tried to get some Wtb Dissents but none available ...:(
Where did you get yours ???
I got them from JensonUSA with bunch of other stuff, so there was extra postage to pay but we spread it across three mates for stuff they wanted but couldn't get in Europe.
They are amazing, they grip on anything (dry, wet, mud, roots, rocks...), found them really spectacularly good.
The carcass is so stiff that the kids were playing with them when they arrived, like victorian kids chasing a hoop with a stick. Prob only need about 5psi.
But, they are so ****ing heavy! I think mine came to 1400g each. Absolutely no issue going down, and that weight, plus 29er wheels, made me a riding god just for one point in passportes last year in the forest, wet and rooty. I was barrelling through just shouting ACHTUNG as the bike just rolled through it all. Glorious.
When it points up though, or you have any road riding to do on even a slight uphill angle, then it is absolutely brutal!

didnt expect as many replies as this but thanks for the posts, up to now ive been in the LBS and looked at a pair of ardents 2.4.
I love my WTB Bronson's, they're cheap too from Charlie the Bikemongers.
really like my Specilized The Captains, they roll nice on their middle ridge and are grippy in a good controlled grabby way in the corners, good weight (esp. S-Works version, fair price. 2.0 looks and feels like 2.25 elsewhere
I've only just built mine up but have a Maxxis Aspen on the rear and Ardent on the front. Rolls really well, haven't been in too much mud yet but the short section I went through they were a little loose, but the balance of fast rolling against not so good on mud works for the sort of riding that I'll be using the bike for.
To add to the above I'm comparing to a 80psi semi-slick CX bike tyre which were interesting in the mud.
