Anybody got any good advice on a set of quality grippy 29er treads for the bike. Looking for something that is fast rolling and high volume, which grips, big ask. Thinking Race King 2.2 or something from bontrager??

Any info would be muchly appreciated.

Jones ACX seem popular but i have not tried them myself. I like my Spesh The Captain tryes as all rounders but have Bonty Mud X on at the moment. Panaracer Rampage are ok as well but a tad heavy. Good volume though.

Try 26".

I hear there is a good selection.

Funny that.

Using WTB Prowler/Nanraptor (I think - XC one with very little nobbles) on one and Maxxis Crossmarks on the other. Both bluddy great

Have used Bonty ACX's and Mud X's extensively in 26" format and can say they're great tyres, so can only assume the same for 29er. They're not the biggest or most cushioning though!

Got Kenda Nevegal 2.2's on my 29er at the moment, and they're massive for a 2.2" tyre. Pretty bloody grippy too, can run them at nice low pressures, not the lightest or the fastest rolling though.

I'm keen to try the Maxxis Ardents in 2.25", they look BIG yet relatively light, and fast rolling, decent amount of side grip too by the looks of things (which is my criticism of the Kendas as they don't bite too hard when leant over). There's some fairly new offerings out there from Bontrager that look like they might be up to some cop, the 29-3 and 29-4.

Or there's the 2.25" Bontrager Jones XR F&R set that are big, fast rolling and grippy (as long as it's not muddy). Got a part worn set you can have for £20 if you wanted, I won't need them, too much mud and snow round my way!

I like my Spesh The Captain tryes

Where did you get them from?, can't seem to find anywhere in the UK that sells 29er specialized tyres.

2.25 RRalfs for the dry.
Zooooooooooom!

Just two sets of 29er tyres that work a treat. Tubeless too. So simple now I think about it!

What a pleasant place to be. My shed's seemingly full of all manner of 26er tyres for this and that!

+1 for the Panaracer Rampage. Switched to them after a good review in STW, from Kenda SB8 which were fine in the dry but not 4 season. The Rampages seem to cope with anything from mud to tarmac - interested to see the 26inch version getting the thumbs up in another ( and obviously inferior ) MTB mag this month. SB8s ar elighter and may go back on towards the end of summer for MTBO on dry gravel/hardpack.

The spesh captains drag like hell though on hard stuff or if you go on fire roads etc. I much prefer my Kenda Small Block 8s, less drag and only a slight loss of grip. The captains are good for winter riding in mud and grime.

Also recommend RR for big volume the dry, at the moment I like the Ardent up front for a decent volume and quite grippy tyre.

ignitors just turn into big muddy slicks in poo weather, very fast in the summer though. Bonty ACX are very good and if you put a bonty team semi slick on the back it goes like buggery in the theoretically drier bits of the year.
Have also tried kenda karmas but they are seriously heavy

ralphs are fab but a bit fragile for some of the rocky descents in the peak.

My - that's helpful MarkD. I'm guessing you don't sell 29'er stuff?

Ardent is good, fast rolling and cushy. Good on most stuff inc rocks and roots, but suffers in gloop as the tread isn't deep enough, though it does clear quite well. Crossmark is fantastic on rear and suits the same conditions as the Ardent. Bonty Mud-X is great in gloop, though I run a Rampage on the front in gloop as my bikes are mostly rigid, and the mud-X is too wee on the front for comfort and traction in sketchy sections.

The new Bonty FR3 looks interesting as a ft tyre - big and aggro cornering lugs - might pair up well with a Crossmark on the rear.....

Having said all that, I mostly can't be arsed changing tyres, so stuck with Ardent/Crossmark at Strathpuffer. Fair to say that there was a fair range of conditions, and they i don't think I could have picked a better compromise even if I'd bothered.... The long contact patch broadens a given tread design's application range.
