Any better suggestions than a Hope?
Current wheel is Alex rim on Chosen hub, which was fine, but the freehub is on its way out after 14 months.
Tonight's ride was labelled the 50:50 freehub ride. So called because it was anyone's guess whether it would engage or not. Bastard thing. Sometimes it was fine other times a whole revolution spinning in the breeze. Like playing Russian roulette with your kneecaps and nuts.
DT Swiss. Hubs, rims, spokes they do them all and it's all good reliable stuff.
Low cost, but good quality:
FunWorks rims with DT Swiss 370 hub.
I order the stuff at actionsports.de
They have a great, great configuration page for custom wheels. 29 er rear wheel as above: around 120 GBP?
FunWorks is their own brand of rims - they make them somewhere in Asia. For a bit more money you get DT rims there as well.
Your Alex rims. They are not bad. But guess quite narrow. Would spend the money for a wider i.d. rim. If you run 2.2 rubber at least 25 mm i.d. rim.
You've not said what sort of riding you do and what tyres you run but you can't really go wrong with Hope Hubs but their own brand rims are a bit narrow by current standards.
I've got a set of Hope Wheels with Stans Flow (not sure which version as I took the stickers off but they are 25mm internal) and a set of Superstar Electro/Tesla wheels with Alex Supra 35 rims (30mm internal).
The Hope wheels were better built but 10 mins with a spoke key after a few rides sorted the SS wheels out.ย I have had other SS wheels that have been slightly better built.
The extra 5mm rim does plump up and square off a 2.3 Minion significantly but the 2.5 Minion WT I have on the front is just peachy.
I really like the wider rims and they are nice and stiff but I have the clearance in the back, you may not.
Code UPGRADEME knocks 30% off superstar wheelsets at the moment.
Just Riding Along are also very well thought of.
And important: be carefully with Formula hubs.
In my opinion: crap!
Wheel is for rigid steel singlespeed.
Current rim is 23mm I. D.
I'll never buy anything from Superstar again after bad experience in the past, and for warranty reasons I'm averse to buy from Germany
Hunt seem to get good reviews.
