[#4967553]

Saved up, ready to bite the bullet and go for a Carbon 29er for big XC days out (Kielder, 12/24 type events)

I've narrowed down to these two:

Cube - ugly but good spec and nice agile handling.

Whyte - better looking, worse spec and I know I'd end up upgrading stuff

As I'm incapable of deciding - help! Anyone got any experience of either bike? I want an all day machine thats also relatively huckable.

I'd go for a Canyon, but I've no idea on what the UK delivery times are like.

I've not ridden one but I suspect the Canyon Geometry would be all wrong for me - long legs and short torso, so I usually end up with shitloads of seatpost out.

Had similar choice of bikes to you.

Didn't like the kit on the whyte, the cube was lovely, but wanted the slt. There was none!

Went on a Scott demo day and got a scale 920. Couldn't be happier.

All day - yes, huckable - no it's an xc bike

Cheers

I've had a go on Scott Scale, it was a great bike.

The cube looks like a good bike.

I have last years cube gtc, it's a very nice bike. Granted the whyte looks very nice.

If you really are bothered about looks then go that way. I actually like the look of the cube in that colour anyway. I like o be a bit different and not follow the masses.

I've got a 2012 Cube Reaction GTC SL 29 and it's a great bike; light, fast, agile and a whole lot of fun - love it.

The only criticism I have is the lack of mud clearance between the rear tyre & seat tube, it's not been a major problem for me but worth a mention if you're often out in the mud!

I think most 29ers are not great for mud clearance.

Short chainstays & very little clearance between seat tube and tyre.

I have the cube and I love it, so there you go typical well informed single track answer.

To reiterate, I love my Cube but the Whyte mud room is better even with it's (claimed) 2mm shorter chain stays...

Teated a Trek Superfly elite today (along with Cube Stereo 140 and AMS 120) I own a Scandal 29er (for couple of years now) - I'd go for a scandal frame with posh build. J E James are doing 15mm Rebas for £270, along with XT build and decent wheels - would be my choice.

Buy a kinesis FF29 with loads of mud clearance and better looking to boot.

Yeah that Cube is ugly!

Likely in your heart you already know what you want. Get that one.

I like Whyte because they are British. A bit anyway.

Also from your requirements it sounds like you are barking up the wrong tree here and a steel HT like Solaris, Whyte, Genesis, Niner etc are more what you should be looking at. Carbon race bikes aren't very huckable!

Mattjg - point taken - I have a Soul for leaping around but really this is meant to be my race bike for long distance stuff. I just don't want a 29er that only goes in straight lines. Kinesis is interesting.

I wanted the same thing too and just bought a Lurcher after owning a Scandal for some time. The geo is spot on for xc but its not afraid to get air or tackle steep stuff. Ticked almost all the boxes for me; time will tell how the press fit bb lasts.
