KHS Yuma, Canyon AL29, Inbred with cash to spare, build your own Scandal/Swift/El Mariachi/Mamasita from frame & bargain bits.

+1 for KHS Yuma. In fact for another 100 quid you can get the KHS full susser. Do you REALLY want a HT?

My mate got a great Cube hard ail for a grand. Looks great, decent spec, XT rear mech, decent Rockshox Recon Gold forks with remote lockout.

I would have a nose at Canyon AL29/Yellowstone 29.

Or Radon ZR Race 6.0 29 on Bikediscount.de

Amazing value for money on all the above bikes.

Test rode 729 the other day, can't say enough good things about it, though don't have much experience of 29er's. Definitely not a pure XC bike, though I don't know whether it's trail enough.
Those canyons look stupidly good value

The Whyte 629 is a fantastic bike for the price. Lighter than the competition, superb geometry, great kit for a sub £1k bike. You won't regret buying one for sure!
