Thinking of running 1 x 10 on a 29er will a 36 upfront to a 36-11 rear be a good place to start, for a purely Xc bike to do long rides and the odd race, trail centres should be fine, not sure with only ever having 26 " bikes before.

1 x 9 32T 12:36 on mine, wouldn't fancy a 36T myself

1 x 9 32T - 11/34 here, although thinking about going to a 36T.

Any ideas where I can get a 36 tooth ring to go on either a Sram or Shimano standard nine ring cassette ?

34 x 11-34 here. 1x1 is low enough for Surrey and racing - might think differently in the Alps...

For comparison my 26" bike has 36 x 11-36
