ta woody (that handle always makes me chuckle) I'm more thinking of what I can do with a narrower and cheaper tyre on my iterative/experimental foray into fat.

Lipseal - very similar, if not identical. I was told mine was a Koxx so I suppose quite possible they are made by the same people as I'm not up on trials stuff at all.

There's a lot of useful info on the MTB Tires* site.

I think once you've tried the big fat 3.7" Larrys on a 80mm rim, all your other tyres seem much too narrow.

Hence the reason I'm getting wider rims for my 29er - to make my RRs even fatter 🙂

*btw, there's a really good article on the use of dropbars offroad.cynic-al - Member

Edit:

Am wondering if my unbuilt 50mm rim should get swapped out for a 70, someone linked to some cheap wide rims from Germany.

That would be me - I've had 3 sets of wide rims of them so far, 2x100 and 5x80. Got a few wheels to build yet 🙂

The thing about the extra flotation on the fatwheels is you don't really notice it that much unless you have a reference to something else, eg you have ridden it on an ordinary tyre or have someone with you on an ordinary bike. From your perspective on the fatbike you're just riding over stuff.

They're not just for snow - they're great on climbs on loose surfaces and also on those knobbly rocky stretches.

Epicyclo - have you still got your drops on as IIRC that was the first build with the bodged forks?

all your other tyres seem much too narrow.
Yup - even 2.2 WTB's on my 'normal' bike look like they are 23c when you first get on !

I haven't got drops on the fatbike yet because I have an Alfine hub and the changer doesn't work with drops. I believe Santa is delivering a Versa drop lever with Alfine shifters though, so I'll have drops on it shortly.

There are other mods coming too.

BTW if anyone is headed over to the MTBR fatbike forum, I'm Velobike there (it was my name here before I had to change it after the Great Forum Hack of 2009)

sorry I posted that before I'd finished.

it was a different link lipseal.

epicyclo my point is that a 70mm rim seems to be a lot more capable than 50mm...I put my 2.5 Diesel on my 50mm rim and the profile didn't change much.

Aye it's interesting. I wonder if most of the appeal of the fat bike thing is that there's so much stuff to learn.

In all honesty Al i've always been interested in buying a fatbike since I had a ride on one a few years ago.
Buying a fat front for one of my bikes lead to buying a fat front for another then buying a full fat bike.

But a bit of it has got to do with the fact that the only way to find out how these bikes will feel on an "every day" ride is to own one and try it for yourself.

Sadly there aren't more people out there that are prepared to do the same thing instead of going on "someone I know said this about this kind of bike shite"

As with most things the only way to find out if it suits you is to try it for yourself.

You're definitely doomed once you try a fatbike - even just on the front.

Pic of Endo on 46mm (re-measured) rim on Pugsley non-offset which comes up to about 83mm wide.

It's on 32:18 which is ok as the snow isn't deep at the moment but I'm going to go 1 x 8 when I get back from Scotland.

Would have loved to have taken it with me but the ski gear and all the other Xmas bits means no space in the car 🙁

took the half fatted TD:1 out for a spin today, felt good. i think running the rear at 20psi certainly helped, all good fun

Anyone looking for a taste of "full fat" I'll be in Dalby again tomorrow, yes I know the trails are closed, but even the Forest road is pretty challenging at the moment

Should be in from 10.30-11am until 2'ish, bike is a 18" Pugsley with SC32's on the front, Larry front, Endo rear, crank bros pedals, geared but conditions limit number available 😉

Post up here if your keen 🙂

Be warned you will end up buying one once your riden it 😉

Stop it.... Stop it ...... Hopefully the snow will go soon and these fatbike thoughts will be a distant memory as I race around on my 29er with big -ish tyres.....

I like the look of that Salsa, from the States or bought here? Off to look at it's hub set up etc....

You realy think the longing will stop when the snow's gone?

Half fats are fantastic on rocks too. 😀

The half fat's UK brewed and the full fat's an import.

Cheviots is fine on a normal bike for sure 😮
still doable on the pug for giggles
It was the driest i had ever seen it that day up on the Cheviot, hence the Wellington bomber wreck raised out the peat,
That day it was still wet up on the top of Dere Street before Windy Gyle,
If when very wet as in winter the Fatbike is good on the spongy wet grass trails and also dosnt cut the ground up as bad 😉

For those south of the border who have to fight for every trail, this is important.

A fatbike does less trail damage than a walking boot, in fact it tends to compact the trail.

Maybe the ramblers could be chucked off the trails in winter because of the damage they're doing, and only the environmentally beneficial fatbike riders allowed. Well maybe in the flying pig season 🙂

Agree!...Its not about these bikes being better than normal MTBs away from Sand and snow but there low impact footprint on fragile terrain which folk should think about...
I chuckle to myself when sometimes walkers scourn me when i pass them cycling on the local Nature Reserve which i am legally allowed to do on the sandy paths yet there footprint is more compressed than the Pugs 😮

Ta Bruce, good insight into where fat bikes work well.

I guess my interest is in extending my riding. of the trails I know I can think of only a couple that might be rideable only on fat (path on side of Loch Etive). beyond that it's maybe more explorational or snow/sand.
