just weighed my 29' s/speed specific wheels / tyres
4.5kg
10 lbs all up.

Is that REALLY heavy ??

For 29' that's incredibly light. Not sure how if would be for a 29" wheel though.

It's not too bad. All depends really on what tyres you use as if you want to be anal about weight you can get 550-600g tyres easily or you can run big fat tyres with big treads at 850g or more. Over 2 wheels that's instantly up to 600g difference. I have a 3 sets of 29er wheels and none of them are hugely lighter than yours, even my most expensive set must weigh over 8lbs with the current Rampage 2.35" on them (sun ringle chargers - c.2000g per set plus 800g tyres + tubes).
Lighter inner tubes can also save around 50g per wheel for not very much outlay (£7 each?) but puncture protection may not be as good.

Once i'm riding i don't really notice the difference in wheel weight between my bikes.
