by '456' i'll read that as 'steel, sturdy, bit of a hooligan, cheap enough'.

Genesis high Latitude ticks those boxes.

And the XL is a useful 20.5" - enough for my 36" legs.

Parkwood damn short TT IIRC (on one site is currently having a shit) though the Ragley Bigwig is a steel version, though no longer in production, and again quite short TT.
I'm liking the sound of the new Nukeproof 29er HT (details should be available when Eurobike starts) only downside is longish chainstays.
Otherwise you looking at the likes of the Trek Stache or Kona Taro

Other option, not always cheap include..
Kona Honzo
Banshee Paradox
Niner ROS9
Transition TransAm 29
Canfield Nimble9
Canfield Yelli Screamy
Diamondback Mason
2 Souls Quarterhorse

A mythical beast, perhaps? Sadly it doesn't come in green and orange.

Afraid not Ton, I already have way too many bikes in the garage, including my massive XXL Fargo 'cross'' bike. I'm trying to make some space.

mmmmmMMMMM interesting.. £350 & available November apparently, 66degree head angle and the ability to take a front mech, that may well be my winter hardtail sorted (if a bit late)
oh and more usefully (going by last years 27.5), a proper XL size

Sorry Warns74 not really, I'm just passing on info I was told by a dealer, as they had the NP at the "mini core show" last month, with a news embargo till now. I was told though the stays are around 440mm long, so not sure how STW class them as short when the latest Honzo/Canfield EPO stays around 415mm & even latest Orbea loki ('low end' 29er) will have 430mm stays, but not an end of the world issue for me on a winter hardtail
