Evening All,
Right...don't get me started on "The" Bike Shop... For the past month I've been going backwards and forwards, dropping my wheels off to have the Rims replaced...being let down..going back again to pick them up so I could get a ride in..taking em back..because he's got it sorted now..to be let down again...back and forth...let's just say, come next bike purchase...it won't be from this fella.
Anyways, since having my Scott Genius 730, I've always found that on the real hard corners I've had a bit of tire role. I like the bike, but have always found this role over on tight corners a real pain..and a bit scary at times. After changing from Nobbly Nicks or what ever they were to High Roller II's, much better, but still happens when I'm pushing it.
Never really thought about it, but a mate suggested getting wider rims. So, I was trying to get away with just changing the rims to DT Swiss 481's internal width 30mm. I'm running 2.3 tires, so I don't want to go wider than that, but I'm already running 24mm inner width rims, so I don't just want to move to say 27mm....I think 30 is the magic number.
So, after just changing the rims out looks to be a fruitless exercise, I'm going to bite the bullet and go for new 27.5 wheels set.
I'm Swiss based, so although my local rides aren't proper nut jobs, a few times a year I'm getting up into high Alpine stuff, so I think new wheels with 30mm internal rims are a wise investment...although I'm happy to go with Aluminium and don't need full on hard core Enduro wheels set coming in at 1.9kg.
So far, I quite like the look of these:

Any other suggestions on what to look at?
Cheers,

I was wondering if it would work out more expensive to buy parts seperately and have wheels built up, but by golly...Just seen the price of the 1501's built
1,261 Dollars 😯
I've got 401's, only 22.5 internal width. DT Swiss say they are ok on up to 2.4", 30mm should be fine.
2.3 is about the minimum for 30mm internal...so they say, any wider the tire and it starts to get flatter, which means corning isn't as good.
Front I can fit a wider tire on, but waiting for the High Roller II to be tubeless in 2.4.
As for the rear, 2.3 is the maximum I can fit.
I would go for something like the DTs, or maybe Hope on XM481s - Thats what Im rolling on now and I like it ( and sometimes the same on 521s). Sub £500 is a good price for those wheels. As mentioned you need to keep it 2.3 or bigger though I agree.
Would Pro Core help support the tyre? I certainly notice less roll over on the rear, which if I'm honest is only on fast berms I notice it myself. Or a tyre with a stiffer sidewall. Either would be cheaper than new wheels but heavier.
Wider rims won't help tyre roll if you are pushing hard into corners.
I've run wide rims, skinny rims & middle of the road rims (currently 24.5mm) and the only thing that makes a difference is tyre pressure.
Tyres that are too soft roll on all rim sizes & in my experience it's all around the same pressure, regardless of rim width.
2.3 on 30mm might be pushing it a bit.
2.3 on 27 should be fine. Frequency i27's aren't bad and tubeless well - sticking them on Pro 4's or DT 350s/240's should make s good strong wheel.
I'd echo where Hob Nob is starting to go above though - your problem may well be tyres - possibly something with stronger sidewalls?
As above really, a wider rim might help a bit, but it's more likely tyre pressure and/or thin sidewalls.
I've found that the new Specialized GRID tyres have the stiffest sidewalls for a trail oriented tyre. You could try a Butcher GRID at £35 before you spend out on some new rims.
Running 2.25" on my LB 30" 29er rims and they are fine. Except that the rear tyre is VERY close to the frame on a mk1 solaris so I am wishing I had gone for a slightly narrower rim but its too late now!
Opted for Arch Mk3 for my 26" as an upgrade over the Ex and liking them so far. Running 2.25" rear and 2.4" front with no problems.
Not everyone likes Stans rims though and surely you should be going DT Swiss? 😉
But +1 on pressures and tyre construction for this.
Some good points guys. Thanks for your views.
Yeah, I'm wondering if I should up the pressure. Running tubeless, but I'm 1.83 and 90 kg (big bones) so on the big drops/jumps I notice things are bottoming out a bit on the rocky paths.
I'll also try some other tires, High Rollers aren't bad, let's see how I get on with upped pressure.
Anyone had any experience with Continentals? Used to run them on my 26 hard tail and they weren't bad.
Must admit, I was thinking of upgrading from 3x10 to 1x11, but I also know I have another 1 to 2 years before I'll go for another bike, so, my sensible head says save the grand and a bit (Swiss Francs) for new wheels and running gear. Use the bike as is with upped pressure (maybe try some different rubber) and put the money towards a new stead a bit later on.
