Hi All - would appreciate some advice from the forum members experience of this wheel size, and a wheelset I've spotted that seem good value
Not a wheel size I'd normally consider, but I have a NOS Instigator 1.0 frame I'm thinking of building up which will apparently take a 26x3, or 2.7 officially. Have most other bits for a cheap build, and I keep looking at the frame intrigued at how it will ride, old skool but it does look good IMO.
How does this wheel size ride?
After some cheap wheels/tyres for build, seen these on eBay
Anyone know if these are any good? Seem good value. Appreciate colour options may not be to everyone's taste, but will suit frame I reckon
Thanks
they ain't light are they?
maybe look at tarty bikes. they have trials rims, which coupled with slx,xt or similar hubs might build in to a much nicer wheelset for not much more?
didnt think they were that bad considering wider rim.
wIll check out tarty bikes ta, liked price on these though.
Not going to spend much on build as its all old technology, have enough old 26ers, reckon it could be a fun bike with the plus rubber though. Worth a try if I can keep costs down, will look good with these on
Had 26+ wheels on my Rocket for 6 months or so now. Tried them just as a 'what if...?' and was undecided at first TBH, but once I got the pressures within a good range I'm loving them - quite counter-intuitively they roll stupid fast on anything hardpacked and now I know how the tyres work and how far I have to lean them they're proper grippy too.
Would ideally have liked WTB Scraper / i35 rims but cost and availability led me to Flow mk3s on XT hubs - only borderline wide enough at 29mm internal but reliable and not too heavy at a reasonable cost. Width might well be the root of me needing to fiddle with pressures to get the balance between grip and rolling right.
Those Arayas don't look light, and might put you off 26+ because of that but if you're just after cheap then they might do the trick.
Will say that 26+ tyres don't come cheap so factor that in too. I've got a WTB Ranger 2.8 on the back and Surly Dirt Wizard 2.75 on the front - decent combination but the Dirt Wizard will set you back about 80 quid!
Still probably going to try to get some wider rims at some point this year as long as the weight penalty isn't too bad (might even learn to build wheels to get what I want).
Bet the rocket is brilliant with plus tyres and the suspension. Nice bikes
I love the flow ex rims, but not ideal for plus tyres
Got a Karate monkey with them I've managed to squeeze nobby nic 29x2.6s into which has transformed it, mostly works well, big of rub occasionally at rear when climbing and frame is flexing, but otherwise fine for summer use. Not enough clearance when muddy though, if it's cloggy mud. A bit wider than surlys recommended 2.55 max
I didnt think 1200/1300 grams was that bad considering wider rims, not sure what would be light for a 26+ wheelset? they are cheap in fairness
Noted re tyre price, had been hunting for a deal but not many options on mkt so that could be biggest expense. No point building up another conventional 26er though
I'm using Dirt Wizards on my 19 year old Surly 1x1.
They completely transform the bike and I prefer it to my Ti 29er on 2.3" tyres.
So yes, plus tyres work really well on 26".
BTW I had the first version Instigator, and although I never had plus tyres on it, I maximised the tyre volume by using wide rims and that worked better than with narrow rims. It's reasonable to expect the plus tyres will make it even better.

£80 postage?!??
id wait for some lighter/more known quantity wheels to come up S/H. Those will be awful.
Just a thought.
There was plenty room in the Instigator so maybe it's possible to make the trails come alive and fit 27.5".
I was able to fit 2.8" tyres on a wide 650B rim in my 1x1, so it's possible there may be enough room in the Instigator as well.
I think your right, a std 27.5 wheelset may fit, but only with a 2.2 or something std.
I have a set of alpkit rumpus 27.5 plus wheels and have tried it with the new smart sam 2.6, OK on front, too much for rear unfortunately. Can almost squeeze rear in, but wheel won't turn, looks good though, that would have been brilliant. Love the smart SAMs in 2.25 so can't wait to try them in this size
Going to try them on an early troll I have, fingers crossed.
Actually bought them to try on a KM Ops, but have flow ex wheels with 29x2.6 nobby nics, they transformed it, the rumpus look tiny next to them and can't see them riding any better tbh. Only advantage would be clearance for muddy conditions
Epicyclo - what was the instigator like then? Certainly a nice looking frame
A bit different to ride. It's a stiff frame by design. I reckon it would be close on unbreakable - which is why I bought it.
I built it up for a 1,000 mile straight line ride through the bush when I lived in Australia and I wanted a bike that wouldn't wallow with a heavy load.
It handled well loaded or unloaded. No flaws other than it was a bit heavier than most, but the extra weight was stuff like strengthening gussets etc, so it's a benefit.
I have a MK1 Instigator.
On the rear the best tyres for width, that fit with space for mud, are either a Chunky Monkey or an Extra Terrestrial BUT these just fit using rims 29mm internal (33 external)or less.
I prefer the Smogasboard out back as it rolls very nicely with plenty of mud space and will work nicely with a good shape on a wider rim.
Up front a Knard on a 35mm internal (40 external) rim fits nicely in either an Instigator or Troll fork. Dirt Wizard works even better up front.
Are there any wider 26 rims that will let you use a rim brake?
Got an old GT Pantera frame I'm considering building up as a Frankenbike with leftover bits, probs 1x10 with a carbon rigid fork. I reckon I could possibly squeeze a 2.4 ish on the back and 2.6 (again, ish!) on the front. It would be an experiment!
Wow, sounds a ride and a half
Not the sort of thing I imagined an instigator would be good for, touring, but as you say, bulletproof? I guess it was sort of one of the forerunners to the troll
Not so stiff it's uncomfortable?
No experience on 26x3", but lots on 29x3 and fatbike sizes - as soon as I first rode Plus tyres I was hooked and have barely ridden regular width tyres since. Most of my riding is natural trails including sand / soft mud but its the superior rolling resistance of a tubeless plus tyre that wins me over. No problems running 3" tyres on 35mm-40mm rims either.
As if by magic.... nothing to do with me, but a damn sight better than what’s in the OP

@ tomhoward - thanks, but sold, and wrong hub sizes. I need the old 9mm QR for mk 1 instigator. Will park that project and wait for something suitable/cheap to come up. Liked look of wheelset on eBay link I posted but seems others didn't agree. Still undecided on those.
Troll Mk1 27.5 plus update
I tried the Troll MK1 (orange) with the alpkit rumpus wheelset and schwalbe smart Sam 2.6 and was surprised/delighted that they fit with rear wheel back in dropout. Super chuffed. Didn't expect it to fit given surly have made mods since to accommodate true plus tyres/wheels but thought it was worth trying given generous clearance and adjustability the rear dropouts offer.
Not true plus but I've been really impressed with this size on KM in 29x2.6 flavour.
Even clearance is not stupidly tight. Room for bigger on fork.
Will see how it rides. Suspect I will eventually want a suspension fork so will be on lookout for something that can accommodate the 27.5x2.6 size with the recommended 100mm travel - if anyone has any insights would welcome them. The 1 1/8 will make this tricky, open minded about pushing it to 110/120mm, not sure if that's a good idea or not from a safety perspective, believe a bit of variance may be ok but not sure. The bigger forks required will obv also effect geometry slightly
Thought I'd post result for any interested troll owners.
