Looks like I've been roped into the Relentless24 so need to get some lights sorted.

What do people recommend lights wise? I don't want to spend a fortune. I'd have thought a torch that takes standard non rechargables would be useful for something like this. Are charging facilities normally available at these events for in between laps?

I had a plan of using a DX light and a torch of some descript that took AAs or similar as a backup. Worried a DX wouldn't arrive in time before the event on 10th October. Do the DX torches only take the 18650 rechargeables or is there a non rechargeable alternative? Also are those tesco torches still available?

Not knowing your budget, but have you considered looking into a light from Trout ?.

I don't think they'd be ready in time. Plus probably a little expensive

Usually 2 weeks for a DX so long as it's in stock.

Glad to see you're not going to rely on just one light though - especially a DX (although to be fair the 2 mode torch and the "bike light" seems more reliable).

Whatever you get - when someone with brighter lights comes up behind you you'll probably wish you'd got got something brighter.

batteries / run time is the real problem.

If its laps buy a cig lighter / 3 pin socket adaptor for the car. charge one battery pack whilst using the other, return to car every two laps for food and new batteries. i did dusk 'til dawn solo last year with a hope vision 1 (takes 4X AA'S) and a 1h fast charger from maplins. £75 for the hope plus £20 for the charger (had a fag lighter and 3-pin plug attachments with it) and 4x2900mah rechargeable batteries.

vision 1 is low powered by current standards though.

perhaps 2 of the £50 dx bike lights. you only need 1, but buy two to get two battery packs. plus a fag lighter adaptor thing. ride for 3h, back in to swap batteries?

edit: just spotted you said 'roped in'. which sounds like a team effort. if you only need 4h or less of light, anything modern should cope with a bit of management - cut the power on the fireroads etc.

I run a HID on the bike [prob not in budget]...supplemented by a helmet mounted Double Shot 'PRO' from the US which was just £79...(brand new on ebay). Might be worth checking out as it gives me a really good spot beam for the money. Only a few quid more than the regular Cateye Double Shot.
The charger works at UK voltages but you will need to buy a UK/US pin adaptor - these are just 2/3 quid though.
Enjoy!
