My eldest will be 8 mid July. He's well overdue a bike, so I've been researching. Sat him on a 24" wheeled bike in halfords, and the size seems good. But they are very lardy. I don't want to shell out Isla bike money, and frankly, the looks won't cut it either. Looked at Frog Bikes and they fall into the same problem.
So suggestions please. Don't want double or triple rings upfront, unnecessary for him. Seen the orbea MX24 Dirt and XC. They look pretty good, and the HOY 24 looks really good too. Anything Ive overlooked?
My 9yr old has mx24 team and its really quite excellent.
He pushes the thing damn hard as he's a bmx racer mostly and so far not a single issue. Its a good weight too.
The team looks great, and quite a bit lighter too. But don't really want to spend nearly 400 quid.
Was going to suggest the Halfords Carrera Blast 24". A couple of the kids had them at the Scout camp at the weekend. Nice bikes, & given they have a lardy suspension fork on, they were chucking them around the BMX track well enough.
I notice Halfords do a hybrid 24" now. Not seen one in the flesh but ticks all the boxes the Isla Beinn 24" does.

Maybe, but it'll last longer than you think and you'll be able to sell it on easily too - and like most things nicer, he'll enjoy it more.
And tbh, £400 is a cheap bike really - how much did yours cost?
if you don't want to spend the money then you are going to get a heavy bike.
my boy has a Carrera blast although its been upgraded. just waiting on his new wheels to fit the 10sp rear. currently 24.75lb
think the original weight was around 28-29lb which is crazy heavy for a kids bike.

Will have a look at the carrera hybrid. That modded blast looks good, but I imagine you've spent a few bob to get it to that weight. Cannot understand why manufacturers put triple chainsets on?!
As for the cost, well the justification is down to the missus. I'd buy the commencal 24" DH Bike 🙂
that commencal is heavy and only practical for DH lol
I've modded it over the course of a year so the money has been spread out. I didn't want to splash out untill I knew he would enjoy and want to do it. the triple is because the cassettes they use have rubbish ratios 12-28 so for climbing having the granny ring is handy. the bigger issue is crank length, the OE crank was 165mm which is the same length I use. swapping it for the thorn 150mm made a huge difference.
Update for those that are in the same boat. Bought him a Hoy Bonaly 24. Really pleased with it. Really we'll put together package. Can't keep him off it!
