In Grasmere for a few days for a conference and will have time to do some riding. I'll prob do a big ride which will be something classic, but I'm looking for advice on shorter stuff that can be cycled from Grasmere village for a few hours morning or evening.
What are the hills immediately to the S and W like for riding - loughrigg fell and Castle How?

Also, is it worth having a dig at the long bw descent into Grasmere from Greenup edge? [I've heard the push up Greenup Gill on the other side is a serious ballache].

You have heard correctly. In fact, I think I would rather pulp my knackers with a steak tenderiser than tackle that bastid again. The descent simply isn't worth it, in fact I seem to remember carrying my bike down a fair bit of the top part, nearly in tears of frustration.

From Grasmere, I'd suggest heading south towards Elterwater / Hodge Close / Tilberthwaite / Iron Keld, etc. Plenty of good riding to be had around there, and any bridleway you find on a map will be worth a pop.
