[#1839468]

Have ridden 22/36 for years but due to the crap chainring clearance on my 853 Inbred (yes I have already attacked the chainstay with a hammer just to get the 36 on) was considering dropping to a 34.

Will I notice much change in top end? (I don't race)

Will I actually get much more clearance?

Should I just buy an mmmbop instead ๐Ÿ™‚

Space your crank arm out slightly more?

You'll lose 5.6% on your top gear.

The jump from 12-11T is 8.3% so it's a like losing 2/3 of your top gear.

1 - about 5% difference - on 25mph that's about 1mph
2 - 36T chainring is about 7.3cm radius and 34T is around 6.9cm so it'll add around 4mm clearance (or more depending on the profile of the stays)
3 - since this is obviously what you really want, yes ๐Ÿ˜‰

Have already used a longer BB to get the chainline out as there are only 2 rings, if I go further I think the line will be crap(per)

cynic-al, perfect thanks, that is exactly the kind of thing I was completely unable to work out! Doesn't sound too bad really does it.

Can't someone talk me into changing frames instead!

think the ratio is something like 'for every tooth lost at the front, is the equivalent of 3 at the rear'

you will hardly notice it ๐Ÿ™‚

Scrub out 34 and write 36 on it in tippex. Used to help a mate when he was riding solo singlespeed races ๐Ÿ™‚

use sheldon brown for gear ratio comparisons.

i think you will find that sheldon recommends that you ditch your totally inadequate frame and buy a shiny new one - how about an *insert frame of choice*

ordered a 34, I reckon Tims right I will probably forget it's not a 36 pretty quickly

might buy a new seatpost instead of a frame

inbreds are uncool now, so it's actually very cool to ride one - see?
