I've been running 22/36 and no bash for ages but do loose the chain off the putside sometimes, I don't really need a whole bash, I saw a pic of this -

I was bored, so made this -

Can't decide if it looks stupid or kinda cool! Not had a chance to try it yet. It's more for chain retention but is made from an old 3mm down hill chain ring so quite strong. Weight 23g 🙂

How will that stop you losing a chain?

Errr - the RaceFace one is designed to protect the outer chain ring on a triple not actually keep the chain on guys...
With that in mind I suspect RN's will work as well as the RaceFace one!

You always go the same foot forward I'm guessing. I recently forced myself to run wrong foot forward, getting to the point of doing log-overs and drops the wrong way round makes riding technical pedally stuff loads easier.

Curious about "I dont need a bash guard" statement. If so why not put the outer ring back on then?

coz a big chainring gets in the way, I used to scrape a 44T off rocks and logs all the time. Unless you are riding over/off big stuff you probably won't strike a 32/36 ring so no need for a bash. It's a question of weight vs probability of bending chainrings. On my XC bike I ride 22/36 bareback 🙂 rufty tufty bike 22/32/bash

Those are indeed just for bash protection not chain keeper. If you do ride right foot forward I'd make one that goes further round and butts up against your crank arm. But good effort.

Why not just run a dual ring chain device and an actual bash gaurd, I run a 24 / 38 ring set up!

"Curious about "I dont need a bash guard" statement. If so why not put the outer ring back on then?"

coz I don't need the extra 1.5 gearsish that would give me

plus then I'd have less clearance (I have bent 2 big rings before I saw the light)

"Why not just run a dual ring chain device and an actual bash gaurd"

because I don't need that level of chain retention and bash protection

Anyway it kept me amused for half an hour, i think i'll try it and see if I can bash it on something 🙂

I did consider a blackspire stinger but wasn't convinced I could BB mount one with a square taper BB
