Anyone got one?

Have got a option to get a S5 frame only

But I’m currently on a SC large HT

On paper the stumpy evo is massive in comparison and I don’t feel stretched out on my current SC HT in large

Is it a big jump to go to a s5?

Has any one ridden one how does it climb/descend?

Love the idea of all the adjustments

What generation HT? Current one is ~470 reach in L (497 XL IIRC). Vs S5 spesh which is 498.

Yes, that's only one metric. But it suggests that the Stumpy will be like sizing up at least one size on your HT, maybe more if your HT is older. Whether or not that's a good thing is up to you. I'm in the camp of longer = better for most people, most of the time.

If you're ~6' then I'd say you can't go too wrong with S5. But that's a total guess. I haven't ridden one, although my current bike has similar geo to the S5.

Yep current generation HT

On paper xl HT is slightly shorter than the S5

I’m circa 5ft 11” maybe just touching 6ft

Current HT feels good I wouldn’t want it any smaller mind

The guy I can get it off is the same size but always runs xl/s5

What's wrong with the SC that you think the Spesh would be better?

I fancy a change tbh and like the idea of spesh, given lbs is premium dealer means any issues I’d get sorted quickly as I ride with one of them too

I’ve had numerous sc over the years and think it’s time for a change really that’s about it fancy a different platform of suspension and it’s a cheap way as most parts will bang straight on, plus I’d likely get some cash back for selling my frame too which is handy now

Don't just look at the reach in isolation. For example what's the seat tube angle? Will you be closer to the bars?

What size stem do you have on the SC?

I'm 6ft3 and my old 2016 stumpy felt fine (reach 450 ish) then I rode a scandal at 480 reach and that felt really good. When I swopped bikes the stumpy felt too short.

Can you test ride one, I know its not easy during covid but its an expensive mistake to make!

Yeh seat angle is very similar

I’ve got a 50mm stem on this currently so could go shorter if need be to bring it in a bit

I’m not adverse to going longer as it will be better for longer days out in the saddle and more stable on rougher trails now I can get further afield again

It’s just I don’t want it to be too big once I get into the woods

I can hopefully get a ride on it too so should clear it up but not sure when so after some feedback on generally how the new one rides too and any positives or negatives that anyone’s found so far

Yep, been on one for about 6 months now.

I’ve gone away from riding massive bikes so on an S4 at 188cm & like it a lot. Like every bike, it does have some niggles, but that’s something which is personal.

I run mine with a coil, and whilst it’s considerably more progressive than the old one, it’s still not progressive enough if you are a quick rider. The HBO on the shock helps, but I’m just waiting for the Cascade link to show up - out of curiousity as soon as WRP mullet yoke comes out, I’ll try that too, as I’ve ridden a couple of mullets recently and they really do rip in the corners.

The BB is low. Again, higher than the old one, but it’s still bloody low. I run mine in high/slack as I am a fan of the short stays, have found it the best combo.

It’s 99% as quick as my old ‘20 Enduro on nasty, rough stuff, but everywhere else it’s a better bike, and a riot to ride.

I’d have another & it’s the first bike in a long time I’d happily pay retail for 🙂

Hmmmm! Very positive coming from you hobnob

I know you put bikes through paces and aren’t afraid to criticise them if you find fault

You almost tempted me into a sb130 until it cracked ha 😆

But sounds good was gonna ask if its comparable to a enduro given it’s got so many setup options and the head angle can be made as slack as that

So sizing wise then I’m 183cm and quite comfy on my large Hightower v2 it neither to small nor too big it feels just about right (finally after many years of them being especially short everywhere)

It’s just whether the S5 is likely to feel a bit bigger or like stepping up to a geometron type bike which I don’t really want

I also want a coil at some point in the future and have no chance of doing that on current HT

Could have the evo as a air shock for bigger xc days and bung the coil on with a change of geo for rough days out

Do you think it will be noticeable size wise wise shifting from mine to the S5

Fwiw the ht is pretty much the same give or take a s4

Also how does it climb it hasn’t had the most glowing reviews going up hill? One thing about the Ht Is a belting bike to sit and spin uphill by far the best I’ve had (albeit this is my first 29er so that maybe why! )

Have you looked at the Hightower Cascade link - supposed to improve clearance and let you run a coil.

Also ups the travel and lengthens the chain stays a little!

Prob a bit cheaper than a new Specialized!

I tried an S5 but found it super close to my S4 Enduro, which is probably about right, they are fairly close. To me it wasn’t what I was going to want, and would be a bit plough like.

I know from experience the S4 is in the right zone for me in terms of feel for size, and the way it makes a bike ride so was fairly confident in that choice. I think to be fair, I could make an S5 work, but I would be battling it on the (very) steep and tech local stuff.

Not the easiest bike to try at the moment though, given I think most of this years allocation has gone or is pre sold to customers...

Oh and climbing wise, I would say it’s not as good as the SB130 (which was a very good climber) but noticeably better than the Enduro. I would say it’s what I would expect from a 150/160 bike.
