It’s really hard to say. I think a L would work well for you but it’s impossible to say for sure. You are on the boundary between L and XL. Not traveling anywhere near north Spain I suppose?! I would post up here or Orbea has an owners page, maybe people will have one to try where you are. It’s worth a try.

My opinion is that both bikes would work but given your bike now you would be best on the L. But people are different and near the boundary between sizes it’s hard to give a firm recommendation.

I wish!

Thanks for your help - I appreciate that eveyone is different & nothing beats actually getting on the bikes to see for yourself.

Anyone done anything on these for a bash guard?

I see on Pinkbike they mention lack of ISCG tabs.

More thread resurrection here while i'm reading.

As some of you will have seen i've recently bought a Bird Aether 7.... Which i'm slightly (maybe more than slightly) struggling with at times. One of these has come up locally for £1100 and barely used in a LArge (sizes up a little small as we know from here and others). I'm at 6'0 which is within their realms of fine on a large.

Overall though on the carpark/driveway test it rode really nicely and was poppy and playful which massively appeals. Compared to the more straight liner feel of the Aether7.

For the price and the condition it's in, i'm very much erring towards getting the Occam AM.

Can't comment on the older AM model, but I'm 6'1 on a large of the current model and it fits me nicely.

Thanks Davros.

This one is a 19. Which makes it 27.5 which i prefer over 29er which seems to be the later ones.

Hi weeksy. Looks like the AM is the previous model to the ones mentioned in this thread, is that right?

I think @scotroutes has one...

I've got an M10, and after some rocky ( actually more swampy, muddy, nasty rutty, pedal strikey )bobbing around in the Peak and regretting it...

I now love it.
It's not particularly light or poppy, and climbs only reasonably (IMHO) compared to previous bikes, BUT it is utterly splendid on proper gnadgery stuff compared to my previous bikes so I'm happy.

Oh forgot to add. I [still] find it very difficult to get my weight forward properly all the time. Have to make real effort to pull forward.

If I'm tired and on tricky stuff I often end up way back on the bike losing control as the front end drifts. Had a couple of offs doing this.

Of course none of this is the bike's fault, it's because I am shite, but I seem to recall you having similar issues on your Aether, so it may not suit you?

Yeah slightly, 2019.

According to geometry geeks it is 2cm higher BB than the Aether7 so shouldn't get strikes compared to the Bird at least

It's so different to the Bird, you're already way more forward than on the Bird.

There is an Occam owners group on Facebook, where they become available every so often. There is a slight problem it seems with the shock bolt on the alu model snapping, so replace that with a steel bolt.

The shock bolt issue is only on the 2020/21 model. I don't think it was an issue on the older ones. I have a 2020 H20 and didn't have any problems but replaced it for the sake of £6.

I'm about 5"9 and have a large which I think is just about right for me. Really enjoying riding it. Only thing I have changed so far is the saddle. The Fizik that came with it must be the most uncomfortable saddle I have ever sat on.

Next thing will be the rear tyre. The Rekon just has no grip in the wet but is really good in the dry

I have this bookmarked, the leverage curve of the 2020 model, but it also includes the 2019 so may be of interest to compare. I don't remember seeing one for the Aether 7 (35% rising rate) but it's probably similar to the Aether 9 one (30% rising rate).

It’s so different to the Bird, you’re already way more forward than on the Bird.

Numbers of interest - in size large, the 7's front centre is 1.91x (about as extreme as it gets) longer than the rear, compared to 1.76 (pretty normal) for the Occam AM.

According to geometry geeks it is 2cm higher BB than the Aether7 so shouldn’t get strikes compared to the Bird at least

I see 17mm difference. At sag, maybe 5mm less due to extra sag impact of having 15mm more travel? When your pedals on a sagged bike stood vertical are only 11.5cm off the ground (Aether 7), it's a chunk extra.

All good info boots... As i didn't get any interest in the big pink thing, i've thrown the toys out of the pram and it's staying... But that's for another discussion/thread (that doesn't actually exist and arguably never will) but that's the the links/info anyway.
