Hi
I've got a frame that should have a 200x51 rear shock I've got a spare 200x57 any reason I can't run it on the frame ?
Has anyone done this or is doing this and is alive to tell the tale ??
Cheers
Check the clearances at full shock bottom out.
I ran a 209 57 on a giant reign which should have a 200 57 shock. At full bottom the front mech caught the swing arm. It also made the frame a bit slacker as I ran a bit more sag.
I ran it like that from 2008 to 2017 🙂
I’d knock up a wooden dummy shock with the fully compressed eye-to-eye dimensions, fit that and check for clearances, chain growth, etc.
The simplest thing to do is fit it with no air and compress it to check for clearance. It's going to add a little more than 10% to your travel, so the chances are that the extra 7mm of stroke will result in the tire hitting the frame, probably the seat tube. I imagine the longer the stays, the more clearance you have to long shock.
Folk have been doing exactly this on the Hightower in 29er mode, then flipping the chip to 27.5 mode to raise the BB and add a bit of extra clearance at the seat tube - runs very very close though.
Hi Stennah, I just measured 139mm eye to eye on full compression, thats with the linkages just touching each other.
Wheel will not hit seatube, plenty of clearance there.
Anyone done the opposite? of course there won't be clearance issues etc, so just asking about feel of the frame.
background is i'm running B+ in a frame originally for 26" (i couldn't believe it either).
i have a 27.5 fork in the front which because of mods i've done, has only ~135mm travel, instead of 150mm and the frame is at 150 still. assuming a direct proportional relationship between frame and shock rate, (i know it's not) a 200 x 51mm would reduce my travel to closer to 135 at the back as well which would be about the right amount for me and my riding anyway. but, assuming it's a half decent shock with the right tune, would it just feel weird? ie travel would stop before the end of the frame rat e graph so to speak, and last bit might be odd; bottom out too easily/not easy enough.
course i could just try it, but don't have the cash lying around to throw at that kind of experimenting.
apologies for thread hi-jack.
OP what frame and shock do you have?
It is a 2010 Meta Ltd and the shock a 200x57 x-fusion rcx
You could run a 200x57 in a Trance (the first gen 27.5 ones) and get 157mm rear travel instead of 140mm.
I can get a 200x51 but it's a ML whereas the rear shock that came off the Meta was a MM , would I notice a lot of difference ?
