Anyone know what the standard spring is? Ie, the one in my forks that is too stiff for my puny frame? I'm right in thinking I can't adjust pre-load aren't I? Anyone know where's good (ie cheap) to get a new spring?

Cheers

would also be interested in spring weights.

toying with the idea of getting shot of the 2-step and dropping a coil into mine.

mate has a coil but i find it a little too soft. his is on a 456, mine is on an Alpine and as such the fork is riddent more than it would be on a FS.

my fork is currently running 110psi and i weigh 71kg. i was thinking that maybe i would need a middle weight spring.... any ideas?

Alpin - middle weight spring is probably right for you. I weigh about 90kg and I'm right on the border between "firm" and "extra firm" on my coil Lyrik. Went for firm in the end to keep the fork supple on the small stuff. Seems to work pretty well.

What about my questions though? I need to know what the stock spring is so I can then go one lower?

Standard (red) spring is 72-82kg

Soft (yellow) spring is 63-72kg

Extra soft (white) spring <63kg

Step away from the Lyriks Peachey!

I'm 66kg, so looks like I was right about needing to drop a spring size.

Next; where cheap?

There wasn't a firm spring I'm afraid, anywhere on ebay, just some chap in America with 8 light springs.

thanks steve....

anyone else any opinions on spring weight?

as said, i need more reliabilty than the 2-step can offer and i like to 'ride the fork'. i weigh 71kg.

cheers

Could be tight bushings rather than spring weight. I'm bang on the medium spring weight at around 73kg, but found a medium spring really harsh (no small bump response) 'til TF resized the bushes. Post service, the medium was perfect.

so how puny is your puny frame?

Ridiculous that they need a service to work properly, but there you go...

Alpin I'd say you would be a standard spring and you should 'enjoy' as much as of the stanchion travel as possible.

I've got my replacement new coil Lyriks from fisher (replaced 2steps) and this weekend I used them for the first time with the standard spring, 98kg and the compression wound on. Yes they were quite linear but it wasn't by no means the end of the earth.

No offence to TF- I'd go up one less spring than they recommend. There are a few posters on MTBR forum who discussed this and suggested using the compression dials more to fine tune your preferred ride.

I'm going to a firm.

I weigh 75kg and I find the std spring great for big hits but poor for small bump sensitivity. I just live with it, it's always going to be a compromise.

Mine appears to be leaking oil again today (and the lock-out's stopped working again too) 🙁

Oh well, I was going to send them off for a service before the season anyway...
