Always use XT 11-34, but they are now stupid money. Can I use an SLX on Hope pro2 without effing the alloy freehub? Sram seems a bit cheaper than shimano now.

SLX should be fine, although Evans are still flogging OEM XT cassettes for £45. If you look at the weight, the XT cassette is over 50g lighter than the top end SRAM one. So you get what you pay for.

Why would deore not be fine if ignoring weight?

Deore doesnt have an alloy carrier for the rings, therefore the rings eat into the free hub body.

My SLX cassette has an alloy carrier, except on the 3 smallest rings

Mudshark, alloy freehub bodies can allegedly be damaged by steel cassette carriers.

Hmm I have just got a new Pro II hub on my back wheel and swapped over my Shimano HG50 cassette onto it - is it really going to be a problem or is it one of those funny STW OCD imaginary problems? 😉

you'll likely get some marking on the freehub. you might struggle to get the cassette off - last one needed judicious use of the plastic hammer

you can file down the burrs and use again, but cassettes with carriers are in general better for proII

I stuck a deore on my Proll as a stop gap, only on for a few weeks but when I came to get it off had murder. It had chewed right into the freehub. I ended up damaging some spokes in the ensuiing struggle. Go with an alloy carrier.

Just put a deore on my Pro IIs Should be no reason why it would ruin your hub...

Will - it will. The narrow steel rings bite into the alloy carrier.

Glad I read this post now - just realised I've put a PG-970 cassette on my new Hope II hubs. Didn't occur to me about the steel v alloy thing...

How does one go about getting the Xt cassette for £33 on Swinnertons? Looks to be £66 on the website...

Scruff, I've had few issues running non carrier cassettes on my PROII wheels. They do mark the freehub body and take a special technique to remove but I'd bet an alloy freehub body would last in excess of 4 non-carrier cassettes before you'd even get close to needing to replace it. What's the difference in price between XT-deore and the price of a new freehub body?

Also in that time you'd probably need to replace the freehub bearings, prawls etc which come with a new body, so I fail to see how running a carrier style cassette saves money.

I would replace it with a steel freehub body as a few gramms won't make a whole lot of difference if you are heavy enough to trash an alloy one...lets you fit cheaper cassettes too 🙂

Agreed!

Infact I've got one wheel thats about to have it's 4th non carrier cassette fitted and it still seems fine. I think the bearings will go before the body.

Yep, old Hope hubs were never a problem (back in the mid-late 90's when it was steel, steel or steel!) and I have had no issues with Shimano freehub bodies being damaged by narrow singlespeed cogs.

If you think I'm talking about a steel body, the wheel I was talking about is an alloy Pro 2, no problems except for the special removal technique.

What's this special removal technique then?

Hope will still put a steel freehub on a Pro 2 if you ask them very nicely

The special removal technique is to find a way to hold the freehub body, (pair of pliers works for me) and then use the chain whip on each individual sprockets. They only need a light pull but if you don't do this the spider won't slide off. It's pretty easy.

Why did Hope go with an alloy freehub body, anyway? Surely, the older Ti ones were better, as Ti is harder and more durable? I'd rather pay a bit extra, and get Ti (I did, with my XC hubs). Several cassettes, and hardly any wear marks.

Come one Hope. Sort it out. Go back to Ti.

Yeah I just found that...think maybe they've been bought up in the last few days.

Best I can see now is Rutland Cycling on eBay at £39.99 + £2.50 postage. Same cassette is going for £71 on their actual website.

...unless someone knows somewhere else cheaper.

Just bought a top end sram cassette and chain.

-Cheaper, lighter and not too bad. I'm not racing but expect crisp shifting and running. I normally get XT but its one way to tell shitamo you charge too much as what happened with rapid rise and brake shifting.

Still using shitamo mechs n' shifters for now...

Yeah quite tempting...PG980 is the lowest spec with an alloy carrier iirc. £32.95 with free P&P seems good from here...Absolutecycles on eBay

Just to add to the discussion, I took off my HG50 cassette today and replaced it with a PG980, and I'm glad I did. Only used the deore one for three rides with the new pro II hub, and it has already made nasty gouges in the freehub body, and it wasn't easy to get off.

Thanks for the chainwhip tip.

Yep, grumm. Same here. I'd had a PG-970 on my hubs for one lap of Glentress Red, and they had already made some gouges on the freehub. I'd have thought Hope would have drawn attention to this in the documentation that comes with the wheels (Hope Hoops). And come to think of it, why oh why oh why do some component manufacturers still think it's a good idea to use the softest, cheesiest alloy for parts that are going to be under a fair bit of mechanical strain.

Forgot to say - Swinley's had sold out by the time I placed my order, so resorted to Merlin (via eBay)

Yup pretty annoying that this happens, and that there is no warning about it when you buy the hub/wheel.
