had my first proper thrash on my newly built 1x9 setup last night... absolutely fantastic... so so simple and i never found myself wanting for a gear over and above my friends who were all riding conventional 3x9 set-ups.

What type of terrain were you riding? Any road sections?

mainly flat with a combination of muddy moor, gravel fire-road, twisty singletrack, road and a few steep rocking climbs... nothing too dramatic, but great fun in the dark with a 900 lumen light on the front!

the thrash back to the pub was a flat-out top gear affair and i managed to keep up using my 34-11

Thanks, wondered what difference it would make not having a double/triple up front. I guess your pace/cadence just adapts to suit.

I run 1x9 on both of my bikes and switch between 32 / 34 / 36 up front depending where I'm riding and how fit I feel.

I find 32 spins out far too easily for me, 36 is a bit much for some places which means I'm changing gear a lot and losing my "flow" and 34 is about bang on for everything I do.

I ride a lot of Swinley, Cwym Carn, Aston Hill & Afan and all good for that :0)
