[#1938401]

Got the chain retention sorted (i think) - N gear jump stop with bash on outer, and using a MTB short cage rear mech.

Whats the best method of getting the chain length and tension just right?

Ta

what front ring you using?, 32T on mine and i took two links out of a full length chain, seems to work fine, chain and mech not over stretched at the extremes, connex chain though, dunno if chains all start the same length though (sram/shimano etc)

easiest thing to do is just try out a length, you can always add/remove a link

EDIT:rear mech is standard xt length, not short cage

Chain around chain ring and largest rear sprocket, missing out the derailleur, then plus three links and a Powerlink. Feed chain through the derailleur and then join the chain - you should find that the derailleur cage adds some tension. If not, remove two links.

If you have a suspension frame, you should, after joining the chain as described above, remove the shock and confirm that the suspension can travel fully without being impeded by the chain/derailleur reaching full tension.

RD - im using a 32T front ring. Im guessing because im using a short cage rear mech then i could get away with a shorter chain? I think i'll have to experiment with this.

i would think so, look what the rear mech looks like when at the extremes on a 3x9 middle position, as long as it looks the same on 1x9 it'll be fine

my xt shadow long cage doesnt mind a bit of extra tension in a 32/11-34 set up. so far so good.
