Right, might be buying a new frame to take to the mountains/big rocky days out/potentially a&e ;). I won't be dragging it up any Malvern hills which is about the only place I tend to use granny ring.

Will need to pedal it. Do want a bash. Considering 1x10 or 2x10. Expect it'll weigh about 30lbs. I do like the idea of 1x10 but wondered if it'd be a bit limiting. So questions are

- what 1x10 systems are there out there (only SRAM)
- If I go 2x10, can I use Shimano chainsets (seems to be a lot of 3x10 now)
- Is it worth having a clutch rear mech

Any info appreciated. I'm a 3x9 kind of bloke and all this new fangled gearing is a bit beyond me!

The never ending debate. Do what you can afford for your fitness levels and the way you intend to ride. I ride 1x9 but as soon as the gradient gets steep I'll take the 30 seconds or so difference to get to the top by using my feet and not coughing up lung.

I do like the idea of 1x9 (or 10 but then saw the price of SRAM kit!), don't really want to bodge a solution tho. So guess than means a chain device which isn't a disaster.

I don't mind a bit of walking where I'll be taking it. Enjoy the view and all that 😉

A man of your means should be looking at 1x11 🙂

Shimano XTR is available in 3x10 and 2x10. I have 2x10 XTR on two of my bikes, having been using 2x9 for years...

@Simon. I did look at 1x11. I liked the look of it very much. Then I saw the price and had a 'Yorkshire Moment' "You could buy a car for that!"

So far the it's looking like 2x10, funky clutch mech, no chain guard.

Shimano chainsets come in 2x10 as well
and are alot cheaper
I love my clutch mech, kept the chain on through a rocky bouncy day in peaks yesterday wihout any other chainguide, definately worth the small extra premium

I just bought the SRAM carbon DH 1x10 cranks. Only £250 and great quality.

Running 1x9 at the minute with a deore double and bash crankset with the small ring removed and the tabs ground back to allow a superstar plasma to be installed. Got the device for £35 when they were on offer last year. Runs great, although the 36t chainring is about to get swapped for a 32t now i'm riding in the peaks a little more.

So use to 1x9/10 now, rode a demo bike with a 22t ring today and plenty other demos before, it really does not help me out one bit.

You can use any cranksets you want, fit suitable sized rings for your strength and fitness level, viola.

Big fan of 1x.
1x1 on the lightweight rigid
1x8 on the fs bike (32 x 11-32) (that bike was a budget rebuild from the spares box otherwise would have been 1x9or 10)

I have one bike running a triple which is the bike I ride on the road with the kiddy seat on. But to.be honest it would be fast enough running a 34t or 36t ring 99%of the time.
