A friend wants an off the shelf all round capable HT for about 1K.

He likes Specialized (has a road bike) and keeps looking at the HT Stumpy, but I think it's a bit too race orientated for a bike that will spend most of it's time on places like Cannock Chase.

I'm a bit out of touch really, don't buy mags etc

Inbred - 20% off at the mo I think, too, if you spend more than £600.

Edit - 20% offer appears to have ended, sorry.

Inbred/456 would be great VFM, but maybe a bit of a hassle for someone looking at 'off the shelf'. I think the offer is running out soon too (run out already?).

The Boardman Pro is also fantastic value for money.

2009 Orange P7 S last years but certainly worth a look. Superb frame for upgrading, but then again so is the Genesis.

Both of those would be perfect for Cannock Chase, visits to Wales etc.

I think these are great - and very hard to beat for the cash:

EDIT: and only £900 with Merlins 'save an extra 10%'. Bargain!

Merlin are also doing a deal on Coves at the moment. The Hand Job looks like good value at just over a grand.

Doesn't necessarily have to settle for off the peg. If he goes to a proper bike shop they should be able to build him something up for a grand.

If it is off the peg he wants i would second the 853 Rock Lobster, cracking bikes for the money and now 10% off.

Sounds like an Altitude or HJ would be spot on.

Just got mine and *looks* lovely.

That said I've not ridden it yet.
