I've got a Trek 8500 from 2004, if I was buying again I'd go for something a bit slacker and forgiving.

By forgiving you mean steel?

Orange P7, mine came to a bit more than 1k but I'm pretty sure there's a sub 1k one. It's comfy, long travel, just does the job in a quiet no-fuss way.

If i was buying the mo it would be a rock lobster 853. Bargains even before you get the 10% off...bit more XC/whippet orientated tho.

Spud, yes. More flexible, slacker angles all round, less XC orientated, less twitchy downhill.

It's for kid hauling/ training rides/ back-up in case my bouncer breaks etc. Looking at Cube at the moment. The Reaction looks great but over budget.

Spud, depends how good a rider you are IMO. My two main problems with the Trek (especially as a beginner) were that it was uncomfortable on long rides, and that I kept think that it was going to tip me over the handlebars, however that's nothing that can't be overcome with a bit of fitness and skill. 😉

For a grand, if you go for last year's model, you could get quite a good race bike, if you fancy having a go? You could even get one of those cheap as chips carbon frames, build it up cheap, then replace and upgrade as bits wear out.
