Looking for a hardtail 29er for a blatty commute to work through the centre of town and along the canal - on a c2w scheme - any recommendations for a well-specced machine? More than happy to take advantage of the current sale prices on last years models. Would have got a Cube 29er (18") if I could have found one - happy to put a bit extra towards it if necessary, but it's a second bike so if around the £1k is better. Am 6' with 32" inside leg, usually ride a L or 18" frame.
And no, Ive not ridden a 29er but it's a good opportunity to try one. Got a FS bike, so want more in the way of pedalling efficiency and so on.
(was vaguely contemplating a road bike too, but it'd prob get a bit trashed along the Birmingham canals and the roads around us are too busy for other road riding, hence the 29er idea.....)
CX bike?
or Inbred/Scandal 29er are around 1k.
Do you want suspension or rigid forks? I would have said carbon rigids.
got dodgy back and so was probably planning on starting with front suspension. Used to ride a fully rigid Trek all over and down the mountains, but was younger then.
On-One don't take c2w vouchers, unfortunately.....
CX I'd considered, but I really don't want to focus on the road, and having something that may be usable as an alternative mtb for certain days is probably a better bet for me. And, tbh, the look of CX vbikes doesn't really do it for me.....
XL grand canyon 29er too big maybe? I have one for sale under your budget. But I dont take C2W vouchers either, pants!
i'd go CX, will be faster and still prob "overbiked" for most of brum and surrounding areas.
1k will get you a pretty decent bike with discs and a carbon fork.
happy to be overbiked 🙂
like the look and spec of the Cube, but can't find a 2012 in my size.....
Canyon are the obvious choice but no c2w, ditto s/h, sorry.....
Anything on Pauls cycles?

Dont know if they do C2W but they have got 6 months interest free and big discounts on last years models.
C2W isn't that good now anyway.
You may have a problem trying to get a discounted bike on C2W scheme. I know the scheme we use at work has to go against the full retail, not discounted sale, price so trying to get a better bike in the sales isn't possible.
Best value at the moment appears to be bike.discount de. Their own brand Radon are really well specced, obviously not C2W but you could get yourself an interest free credit card or something

You will not get anything this well-specced for the money
will look into it being actually cheaper from .de, but for me c2w works out at a significant saving (~42%) so it's worthwhile - and I've looked into it reasonably carefully.....
The c2w schem we have gives us a £1k voucher to use, so should be fine as long as the shop makes out the invoice for the value of the voucher, or more.
I've just built myself a 29er using a few second hand bits and watching out for bargains. Its a similar spec to that radon I linked to (Rebas and deore level kit) and its cost me between 6 and 7 hundred depending on how I work out the man maths.
I spent a few weeks looking around various options and I dont think there's anything in this country for less than a grand that comes with decent forks which for me is a must have. Its either bottom of the range rockshox at best or usually coil sprung suntours. If you're happy with that then there's plenty of choice, if not then I think you're limiting yourself insisting on C2W.
Says on the on one web site they take all cycle to work vouchers apart from halfords. Might be worth dropping them an email. Full inbreds are £799 I think.
c2w gives me the £1k for £590 plus 12 months interest free credit, so for me I think it's worthwhile. I can then add funds - but would rather not add too much - couple of hundred ok if vital.

ah, then they've changed their policy. Will have a look. Recommended, then, I take it?
Rockhopper Pro?
Trek Cobia? (Or the slightly over budget x-calibur?)
Giant Talon 29er (either 1 or 0)?
Go down to your local C2W accepting shop and see what they can offer. C2W regulations mean that getting a bike worth over £1k may be tricky, because it's a lease, so if you have to pay a bit to the shop on top of voucher value you'd be owning a part of the bike which not all companies like so something to bear in mind/investigate further.
With regards to C2W, dont you now have to pay back a percentage of the bikes cost upon transfer of ownership?
I know when I looked into it last year it just wasn't really worth it when this was taken into account but I'm on a 20% tax rate so YMMV .
I also enquired about a bike in my LBS which was discounted unless purchasing through C2W where I would have had to pay full price. I thought the LBS were taking the pee but apparently their hands are tied by the conditions of the scheme.
Genesis Mantle? Trek X-caliber? Whyte 729?
I've no experience of any of these but I'm hoping our office will re-start C2W so I've been "window-shopping".

yes - but if you 'lease' it for more than a year then that % reduces right down, and our scheme will 'keep' ownership of it for ages, making the % fee minor.
schemes charge the lbs 10% or so, so I'll need to factor that in (i.e. sale price may go up £100).....
will look at the Evans one. Still Cube is the favourite.....
Was looking at getting a Cube Ltd 29 Pro on C2W but just found out yesterday that my work have placed the C2W scheme on hold. Currently waiting to find out why it's on hold, but a little annoying to say the least.

Ah I think thats where we differ, my company were only willing to keep ownership for another year.
For my Cube 29er with Cyclescheme, for a £1k bike, after 12 months, ownership has just transferred from my employer to Cyclescheme, and I've just got had option to:
1) Rent the bike for a further 3 yrs for a £70 deposit which covers the purchase price from Cyclescheme at the end of that 3 yr period
2) Buy the bike outright for £250
3) Send the bike back at my expense...
Singletrack reviewed a KHS 29er back in issue 75 that they really rated. Decent kit on it & retail just under a grand. Can't remember the model name.
KHS Yuma it was, looks great
will look into the KHS - that's a new one on me. No bargains left in the sales then that anyone's aware of?
