Never change any set ups before a race, right?

Well...my Big Dog pairs partner has decided now is the time to invest in a new 29 hardtail for next weeks race. looking to spend ball park of £1k. What's currently out there at this price point?

Any deals to be had/recommendations? He generally rides a medium HT.

Thanks!

Don't buy second hand unless you accept the potential pitfalls.

Is it just me that flicked through those sale links and was really underwhelmed? £1k doesn't go very far these days does it!

Have a look secondhand (or just service his bike for him with new cables and a bit of oil in the lowers). I just picked up a rigid charge cooker for £150 in the classifieds and really chuffed with it.

Not too far over budget once BC discount applied.

£1k doesn’t go very far these days does it! WHAT? well not if you look at Specialized Orange Trek Giant and so on But,

Boardman MHT 8.9 is amazing value this bike has boost front and rear wheels, 1x11 speed slx, Reba rl, Deore brakes, a very nice tidy package.

Decathlon's 1k hard tail also worth a look. Racier cut to it to my eye.

2nd hand, my bikes were nicked 2 weeks before 24/12 so was in a bit of a pickle.

£1100 got me carbon specialized stumpjumper, Fox kashima fit 4 forks , I think 2015/16 model

some great bargains out there to be had, seemingly loads of mediums as well as I struggled to find a large

getting anywhere near similar spec new was crazy money, a grand gets you very little on a new bike these days

for example this - slightly older frame but carbon wheels, 2016 factory fox fork xt etc etc

TBH the spec looks good, but what's going on with that geometry? I usually like to think the designers know best and reserve judgement until I've ridden a bike, but that just looks wrong, 45mm stem, 68deg HA (so far so fun), then from there back its all old skool XC (I.e. it doesn't have the reach for such a short stem).
