Is there any real disadvantage to running a 20mm hub on a 15mm axle using a conversion kit? Will there be a little bit of play or will it be too small to notice? Should I just shell out for some proper 15mm hubs?

What hub? If there's an official conversion kit available then there shouldn't be any problem(Hope,for one,use the same hub shell and bearings with different adaptors to convert between standards).
