Tonight I whipped the wheels out of the bike to pack it in the car after my ride.
Put the rear 142x12 back in when I got home but the axle is now bar tight about a quarter of a turn sooner than before. I've cleaned the drop out inside faces, outboard faces of the hub and the axle itself. So there doesn't seem to be an obstruction or something opening up the back end.
Anyone got any bright ideas? Or should I just adjust the lever position on the end of the axle so it faces the right way and move on...
You haven't managed to pull the cassette/freehub off the hub body have you? I've seen some Hopes where they would almost fall off. Might be worth trying to pop it back in.
Nothing seemed loose but will check again tomorrow.
One of the axles that has a moving head? The DT Swiss type one you can rotate the lever.

Edit: hang on, you've eluded that you can just move the lever anyway, so are you saying it normally takes, say, 6.5 turns and it's only taken 6.25 this time? You're a lot more observant than me on such matters...

Had another quick look this morning.
Should the conical washer (not the right term I'm sure) on the lever side have a 2-3mm gap in it. I wonder if some dirt has got in and spread it, I did have to scrape some muck out of a gap last night, which I don't ever remember doing before.

Right I've sussed it. Axle tightening as was.
It seems a winter of muddy yuck has stripped the light coating of grease from the dropout and combined with that the grit that has found its way into the conical washer end of the axle was making it bind.
Flushed all the crud out of the threads and axle and a light greasey smeer and all seems to be sitting well.
I don't feel at all a bit of a chump. 😳
Last night was flipping filthy, gave the bike a second wash tonight it was still so dirty. 😐
