Hey guys,
Anyone seen those carbon frames going cheap on ebay?
I'm sure they've been mentioned before, but i'm just trying to suss out, what's better- 12k or 3k carbon weave?
Cheers

3K - 3K is the most common carbon fiber that you will find externally on a bicycle. It provides a comfortable ride while still allowing the bike to be stiff and strong enough to handle a powerful rider in the midst of his/her best sprint.12K - 12K is the largest weave and the stiffest. This outer layer featured on the Fascenario 0.8 makes for the stiffest "feeling" ride of all three. It is slightly heavier and much less expensive to use in production, hence the price difference in the Fascenario 0.7 and the Fascenario 0.8.
Ah ok excellent, cheers!
That strikes me as twaddle, the weave you see is just cosmetic. I had an eBay frame with a 12k weave and it was certainly more comfortable than the S-Works Carbon hardtail I had, which doesn't have any cosmetic layer.
Well it depends really on the design of the frame. Some manufacturers undoubtedly to save money make frames from unidirectional carbon then put a thin layer of 1/3k on top to give it the stereotype finish, but the weave itself is far from cosmetic - 1/3/6/12 etc denotes the amounts of tows in the carbon. they all give different characteristics of stiffness, strength etc etc

Yes, but bikes are generally made of unidirectional, I'm not aware of anyone actually using 12k to make frames! I cut up a Scott Spark recently, that was unidirectional with some 3k around the seat and head tube junctions.
It's not really a cost saving thing.
What about 1k? Top end Pinarellos are finished with 1k, but I imagine the frame is UD underneath.
well, are the UD or are they high modulus? Aesthetically, it can look similar but it's a very different beast.
You find a lot of high end road bikes have a 1/2k twill cosmetic surface but like a wilier cento uno is 63T rated high mod underneath.
