I'm looking for a bit of advice. I have a 1x Rival 11 speed set up. I'd like to buy a 12speed Red crank PX have on sale atm, as it has power meter built in and won't foul the crank arms on my Tempest. Can I get away with just chaning the crank or is it chain too, or won't that then run on 11 and so on? Ideas anyone - many thanks
I would expect a 12sp crank to work fine with an 11sp chain.
The sram 12 speed road bike stuff uses a different chain , called flat top by sram.
It has a different pitch.
But I’ve not tried mixing bits myself.
The weight weenies forum may help

All bike chains have been 1/2” pitch for yonks, although Shimano dabbled with a 10mm pitch chain back in the 1970s. A 12 speed chain is 0.2mm narrower than 11 speed - for a chainring this as good as makes no difference. The 12 speed SRAM chain is optimised for their gears - a chainring + crank is pretty agnostic provided the chain width is suitable
Thanks. I was confusing the larger rollers of the flat top with chain pitch.
And am now off down my own rabbit hole of vintage Shimano oddness.
Yeah - the flat top rollers are slightly larger than a 'standard' chain, otherwise pitch and width should be OK. I've seen reference somewhere that 12 speed flat top is OK with 11 or trad 12 speed chainrings, not vice versa though.
I think the answer is probably. Ideally of course if you could get a 107 BCD chainring for 11 or trad 12 speed then there would be no potential issue.
Just like to thank everyone for their replies. I'm going to dive in and so be it - thanks again.
