Does anyone know if the latest xtr shifter should be compatible with saint brakes? I am wondering if there is something missing from the box (ie the ispec B stuff). It just has a kind of matchmaker that looks like half a clamp that is maybe meant to sit inside the brake clamp, but it doesn't work with the saint brakes.

No - just discovered to my cost that the new ispec 2 xtr shifters are compatible only with new xtr brakes. Get the band-on shifter if you can!
