Hi,
1st post in years.....been on a bit of a 'journey'....
I recently bought my son a 2nd hand GT Pantera Elite 27.5+
The drivetrain appears to be in standard spec with a sunrace 11 speed cassette.
I took the cassette off to clean it. On refitting it there wasn't much space for the lockring. I managed to put it all back together and ignored it with plenty of other things on my mind. Then he came back from a ride and the cassette was loose: reason being the freehub had sheared round about 1mm off the end where the lockring goes....interpretation: lockring not screwed in enough.
Finally I find a freehub style that fits it (turns out it's a allterra rebranded novatec hub after thinking it was a formula hub...more common for Allterra..GT's wheel brand...anyone want a KP13 formula freehub?). End up ordering a 11 speed freehub as most readily available and the cassette didn't seem to fit the old freehub. Hence why it broke...
Fit new freehub and I need to add a spacer that came with the freehub to be able to tighten up the lockring: this makes sense: it's an 11 speed mtb cassette on an 11 speed road freehub right? New freehub is a mm or so longer than the old....I thought it wouldn't all fit back in the bike ok but it seems ok. It's a cup and cone hub. Does this sound ok? Anything I should check to ensure it all fits ok? Cassette nice and tight, all gears work ok, no rubbing on dropout, hub axel extends 'a bit' into each dropout but not fully
BUT why didn't the cassette fit on the old freehub? No spacer at the back of the cassette.
All thought gratefully received. Many thanks
Anyone...?
I think I'm going insane...
Sounds like the cassette was miss aligned when you put it back, maybe the smaller sprockets not on properly before you tightened the lock ring - I've done this a few times when rushing and now check the cassette for wobble every time I nip one up.
Or it was the wrong cassette / freewheel previously and only luck stopper the previous owner breaking it.
Either way, if it is now all working ok and riding, I'd forget it an move on 🙂
Sounds like the original freehub was the right one (8/9/10/11spd MTB), and cassette was reinstalled incorrectly - is there a spacer washer with notches to clear rivet/bolt heads which may have been installed incorrectly leading to the overall width being too big/lockring thread overlap being too small?
Certainly shouldn't need a road 11 spd freehub.
