11-46 cassette, 36t...
 

[Closed] 11-46 cassette, 36t chainring, medium or long cage mech?

160mm FS bike, 445mm chainstays. Medium cage XT M8000 mech has jammed and lost tensioning to the chain a couple of times whilst in the the 46 recently (in muddy conditions to be fair). Thought it should be OK with a 1x, has been OK for previous 6 months. B tension set up is fine. Am I pushing the limit? Clutch seems OK when in the stand

According to that 11-46 is fine. Chainring size matters not a jot

This is true, unless you increased the size of the front ring without making the chain longer?

Chain length is good. Guess mech is just on it's way out then. Anyone else had this?

Similar set-ups with Shimano GS mechs on all three of my bikes and no probs, FWIW.

Bet it's an eeb.

Wonder if that might be a factor? Extra torque or something?

Damn right it's an Eeb! No way in hell I'd be pushing that gearing without a motor.

The torque might be a factor. Had a stick flick into the wheel when climbing previously, felt it catch the mech and stopped pedalling but the run on of the motor resulted in the mech shattering into about 5 pieces, never seen anything like it.

Does it do the same with the clutch on/off i.e. is the problem specific to the clutch mode?

You might be able to strip down and regrease the spring/axle and clutch if it's sticking on just one part of the rotation.

If you have a look on the underside of the clutch housing there should be a lubrication port. Pop the cap off and give it a good squirt of GT85 / TF2 spray and see if that makes it any better.

Think Martinhutch has it (I really should try Google before asking on here). Need to remove the tension band from the clutch, clean and regreased. That will be tomorrow's WFH job, reckon that will sort it. Have tried spraying with light lube previously but that does bugger all
