[#9944871]

My Datum currently has a Shimano 105 10sp groupset. The cassette is 11-28 10sp. It has a compact chainset.

If i want to put a 10sp mtb cassette on the rear, an xt 11-36, do i need a 10sp mtb mech or a 9sp to work with the 10sp STI units?

Are there any problems with this idea? I have a new xt 10sp cassette in the the spares drawer, and a new chain too. I also have a 9sp xtr rear mech lying around. It seems like it would be good for my alpine trip...

So long as the shifter and mech are both either 10sp road or 10sp mtb (not a mix) you shouldn’t have any problems so long as the cage has sufficient capacity for your new gear range and can cover the cassette without crashing into it.

Usual sum ((big-little)+(big-little)) to work out required capacity.

Yes, 9 speed Shimano mech has the same pull ratio. I have this setup on my Croix de Fer.

If you want to run a 10 speed MTB mech on a 10 speed road shifter the wolftooth tanpan job does a very nice job.

My understanding is you can get a 9sp MTB rear mech on 10sp road shifters (edit: as above) but I've not tried it myself. 10 speed gets you a clutch if that matters to you?

I've run 10spd road STI and 9spd MTB mech in the past (10spd cassette, obviously) - works fine.

This was on 11-34 though. The 9spd mech 'should' be okay with 36 but I haven't done it myself.

Currently running 2 bikes with 10 speed shimano 105 road shifters, 10 speed 11-36 shimano xt cassette and 9 speed shimano mtb rear mech. Works perfectly.

One is using an xt 2 x 10 chainset, thats a medium cage xt m770 mech. The other uses a 105 50/34 chainset, thats a long cage xtr m970 mech

As above, i run 10spd 105 with a 9spd xt mech, works perfectly.

on my mtb i use dura ace bar end shifters (10speed) pulling a 9 speed xt mech, over a 10speed slx cassette.

works perfectly.
