Any way to get the above to work? I know the cable pull of MTB & road front mechs is different, but would a road mech work with an MTB double?

We've had a couple of touring bikes that wanted MTB triples and road sti's
We got them working with using the correct MTB front mech for the crankset and placing the cable on the underside of the clamp bolt as this shortens the pull. Its not 100% perfect and the shift isn't as light in feel,

But this is the best we've found at work.

Might be a lot easier with a double crankset, but its one of those, try it and see. What size double is it?

Not that it helps you but 6600 is Ultegra, not 105.

For a double I would go with a mech that matches the chainset. So MTB chainset use MTB mech.

I run Ultrega STI's with an XT triple and XT mech - it works but requires a lot of trial and error and the help of a wooden wedge to get cable tension right - think the total movement is an issue for the triple so a double should be a bit better but still a compromise - I'm happy to live with it for the off road stuff on my dropped bar hybrid (was a cx but shortly to be rebranded as a gravel racer ๐Ÿ˜€ )

Yes, you're right, I meant 5600.
