So my girlfriend told me she would be up for doing a metric century this month, and I thought why not. Problem is I don't have any idea on a good route which would avoid the majority of main or busy roads.

Any suggestions for ones either in the Brecon Beacons, or near to FOD (where I live) or around the Bristol area? Preferably without a huge amount of climbing - maybe 1500m or less?

This

avoid the majority of main or busy roads.

And This

Preferably without a huge amount of climbing – maybe 1500m or less?

do not go together in that area unless you are going to ride up and down the valley floor.

Best advise i can give you is to get on RideWithGPS and search for routes applying your criteria. You will find loads.

Here you go, a route I did a two or three years ago that's kinda in the FOD/Brecons-ish area. Really nice, nearly all little lanes:

Which side of Forest are you?

Here's one with less than 600m climbing, apart from 3 miles on A38 all quiet roads/lanes

Gloucester /Broadway

Come on the RDFCC ride on Sunday. Not completely sure where I am taking it but it will be 50 miles plus and its easy to tag on a few more. Heading vague Neweent way so fairly flat. All welcome.
RDFCC FB page for details.

The Avon Cycleway is an 85 mile loop around Bristol. All on quiet roads and cycle tracks, around 1000m of climbing. If you park just outside Chepstow somewhere and cycle across the bridge it would take you up to the ton.

Given where you’re asking about I would do a loop Chepstow - Tintern - Monmouth - Mitchel Troy - Dingestow - Raglan - Usk - Chepstow
The A466 is fine if you are a sensible rider, and Chepstow to Monmouth direction is less climbing. The long steady pull from Usk to Chepstow is fine to twiddle up and then from the top it’s a nice rollercoaster through the woods to Chepstow. Cafes in Tintern, Monmouth, Dingestow, Usk, Chepstow. Should see you a metric century with not much over 1000m climbing.

I filmed the Avon Cycleway in November, in timelapse if you want to get an idea of the route.
