Just rode from my house to try the nearest climb in Simon Warrens book this evening. Huddersfield to New Mill and Jackson Bridge, turn left and the pain started. 161m vertical ascent in 1.5km. The book said 9mins but he was a top hill climber. I did it in 14m30s and wow it hurt. Coughing up all sorts at the top!! Rode back to Hudds (hill up Gledholt bank to my house seemed much smaller!) a shadow of my former self. Happy though ๐
Rob, I've got a nice route mapped out in Saddleworth, 12 short sharp climbs in 30 kms, 1800 feet of climbing....
how about 'the dale' - from hathersage up past the scotsman pack towards stanage - all the way up to higgar tor?
19mins for me...
I kinda like the long evil massive climbs to be honest. I am well overweight and most people on here would go up quicker but I like the challenge - as long as I don't stop I'm happy!
I know it's not a new thing to do but I'm going to try and tick off as many as I can in that book. Gives me a challenge and maybe some new holiday destinations to try!
I got this book for my birthday a few months ago. Ticked off the first three today: Whinlatter, Newlands and Honister, although I rode Honister from the Borrowdale side, rather than the way in the book. Honister was definitely the most evil.
Robdob; is Swains Lane in London in that book? I'm going to kick Junkyard's arse on that climb next summer.
Can I have yer wife's bike please?
shudders with fear...going to london and meeting him ๐ฏ
I rode the Dunkery Beacon one (No 5) a couple of weeks ago in the fog, every time it looked like it was going to level out, you'd go round a corner only to have it ramp up again. I drive up Crowcombe Combe (No 3) every day on the way to work so I must do that again some time an Nos. 4, 6 & 7 are all within reach for a day out (maybe when the weathers a bit better though) ๐
Doing them all would be epic. Especially if you rode between them.
I've done all of the South Wales ones and I think maybe one or two others.
Elf - NO YOU CAN'T!!! ๐
It's a good little book and ticking them off should be fun. There is one in central London, can't remember what it is offhand.
Missed out making the Harlech one while in Wales a few weeks ago. 40% sections in that, are you kidding???
Bealach Ne Ba is the ultimate one but a monster drive to get to!!
From Hudds do the Holm Moss, devils elbow, Snake, strines loop if you want big road climbs. Or just explore the strines for super steep bits.
Head South from Langsett or North from Ladybower, every road is super steep.
This Jackson bridge one was worse than Holme Moss, which is reasonably long but not as steep. Will do that loop one day as I have to tick off Holme Moss - done it before but a long time ago, and on a single speed Azonic DS2. Actually I think I walked most of it with that bike!

It's Swains Lane, a quiet, almost hidden little residential road in North London (near Highgate Cemetery). They sometimes used to hold unofficial courier races up it in the 90's.
There's a Sportive starting from very near mine at the end of October which goes over Cat & Fiddle, Winnats Pass and Holme Moss, I might do that and time myself up the climbs so I can tick them off!
