[#4768065]

Fitted 2 x 10 XT on the Soul earlier this week, ahead of Sunday's race at Newnham Park (postponed now until 27th).

I'm using M786 shifters, which seem way chunkier than my old 9 speed M770 items, and will not sit at anything like a decent angle under my Hope Tech brakes.

Questions - are the M980 XTR shifters physically thinner? Anyone have this combination and care to comment?

Would the Hope Race levers have more clearance under the master cylinder - I've tried looking at pics but the clamp fastens from underneath so hard to gauge. Cheers for any help. Really wishing I'd left it single speed..!

Using a RH M980 shifter with Hope Tech Evo levers here without issue. Angles all Ok etc.

boxfish - are yours the regular 'bar mount' type, or are you using the Hope I-spec type matchmaker mount? I tried matchmaker mounts with my M770 shifters but found they were too far inboard when the brakes were set where I like 'em.

Rob, I shall have to look harder on the Hope site in future! But as above, not mad about the integral mounts I've used previously.

Thanks each - think I'll order up a RH M980 and try it for size.

No matchmakers. Shifter clamp set about 5mm outboard from the Tech lever clamp.

Have you taken the windows off?
My shifters are 15mm away from the grips and levers are 40/45mm in from the grips

Soap - first thing I removed. My brake clamp (edge nearest to grip) is 62mm from the grip. I've currently got the shifters much nearer the grips, so that the barrel adjusters under the lower diaphragm cover, to get something like a decent angle, but they're too far out, and it's still leaving the brakes feeling too high.

I run the levers inboard of the shifters and even with the shift indicators still on they're OK. Depends how far inboard you like your brakes though.

Hope direct mount adapters here with XT, excellent positioning. Rip the shifter indicators off - who the hell looks at those anyway

Try swapping them round brake then shifter should get more
movement

If he swaps them round the brake lever's cam assembly will get in the way of the release trigger. Had lots of problems trying to get these to work together at a sensible angle (it's like Shimano designed them not to work with Hope deliberately), best i've managed is to trim back the shifter mount with a sharp Stanley knife, and file back a little of the reservoir lid where they touch.

Current plan is to try an XTR SL-M980 (bar mount) shifter for size, potentially in conjunction with the Hope matchmaker clamp, then maybe get the I-spec conversion for the XT780 shifters and use the matchmaker clamps, or upgrade to the M980's (not cheap)!

I'm beginning to think I should spend some time designing a neat shifter. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Try swapping brakes and shifters round first. Coatsey might not like it but it worked for me - and it's free.

iqm - I wouldn't run my brakes any further out as I'm very happy with the lever position. If I put the shifters on the inboard side of them I'd never reach them!

I'll report back when the parts have arrived and I've had a chance to try them for size.
