Just musing about the idea of switching over to 10speed, and ditching the front mech.
However I like the idea of being able to brake hard while downshifting the full casette. i.e. to maximise pedalling time during for example, a fast technical descent which turns a corner and directly becomes a steep climb. This would mean braking hard (right hand front brake) while the gears are simultaneously shifted with the other hand.
So do shimano/SRAM make a left hand 10 speed shifter for shifting the rear mech? Couldnt find anything on a quick google. Or anybody have other ideas for solutions?
Cheers
This is why shifters are opperable with your thumb.
And assuimng you won't be pedaling into the corner just shift before you brake?
+1
Steve Peat et al manage, sure you'll be fine!
Europeans of course have their bikes set up to allow you to do this as the brakes are reversed. You could do that if you wanted to.
In what world do you brake hard on a steep tech bit of track with front brake only? Anyway, sounds like you want a gearbox bike.
Does the thumb on your right hand not work then?
Ahaa sounds like there is no such comoponent on the market then, was just curious ๐ So the europeans have a slight advantage there with their brakes the otherway round, but that would take some getting used to!
Aye, can 'make do' with the right shifter. But it did make sense when I thought it through this morning, to have front brake right hand, gears left (feels more balanced?)
Yes please!! Cant imagine it being so light for the uphills though.Anyway, sounds like you want a gearbox bike.
Actually.............
The weight wenies shifter of choice, SRAM doubletap TT shifter and pauls components mount, that should work on the LH side and be uber pimp to boot.
Still dont see the point though, motorbike racers use a thumb lever on the rear brake sometimes, yet still manage the clutch with their fingers, and upshifts with a quickshifter kit?
I think a few Rohloff owners have shifted their brake levers around looking on the Thorn forums. I did think about trying it but you'd need to do it on every bike you owned.
For what it's worth I don't think your mad to want to have your main brake controlled with a different hand to your shifter. Some of the replies have just been "well I've managed perfectly well so far so why change anything." It doesn't seem like anyone's actually tried it and found they don't like it.
