Seens that 10 speed stuff can be purchased for a better price than 9 speed.
Only good if it's compatible though!
Thinking 10 speed XT cranks with 9 speed SRAM block, mechs and shifters.
Yes, no problem what so ever.
If you like to risk giving yourself unnescessary mechanical issues by deliberately spending money on stuff that you know is not compatible with your system and then possibly/most probably having to shell out more money to buy the right stuff later because it didn't work.... THEN GO FOR IT
Thanks for the thoughts BB - not sure they add any value.
Part of the reason for this thread was to find out if there were compatibility issues ๐
Thank you Blazin.
I have a 9 speed chainset with everything else 10 and it works fine.
I was told that you need to match the front mech to the crank.
Mix and match will work but with a slight bit of rubbage in the outer gears.
Sorry I was being slightly cynical there
I'd keep it all 9 speed if it were me. I think you are bound to find it doesn't quite jell. If it is a triple XT 10 speed crank, it's going to be compatible with the new 10 spd front mechs designed for a 42 to 32 Dynasis drop. The older 9 speed front mechs are going to want the 44 to 32 Mega drop and they will have a deeper cage at the back and I doubt you will ever get it to be "sweet as". It is also designed for a different gauge chain. Unless I had stone bonker proof that it was all going to work perfectly together I'd not waste my money.
I was wondering about going the other way - going 10 speed with a 9 speed chainset. I'm not convinced there will be any problems whatsoever but I'd like to hear from people with actual experience.
After a quick google it looks like the chain line I different.
That would certainly substantiate thoughts above.
Hmm.
Chainline is adjustable though.
I'm running a 10 speed XT mech on 9 speed XT cranks, no issues (In fact it shifts far better than my older 9 speed XT mech) - although I'm only using double and bash.
I recently popped a 10 speed x7 double onto my existing 9 speed set up, mainly x9 with an slx f mech. I did find it ran smoother with a 10 speed ultegra chain, that I had in my parts box, rather than the pretty tired 9 speed chain. I also found that using the second click (middle ring) for the double inner ring made it far easier to set up without any rubbing issues.
I am running 10 speed SLX rings on 9 speed XT cranks with 9 speed mech etc.
The ratios are different - 24-32-42 on 10 speed compared to 22-32-44 so you will lose your top and bottom most gears but gain a less clunky change and a bit more clearance. You can't quite adjust the 9 speed front mech to be s close to the chainring as it hits the middle 32 but it doesnt affect it. Just leave the mech where it was when it had the 9 speed stuff on.
Chainline should only be different for the 10 speed XT double I think.
I was wondering about this too (actually posted a few days ago) Im looking at replacing a 9 speed homemade double with the 10 speed XT m785 double but keeping the rest of the drivtrain 9 speed.
the general concensus was that it would be ok. If anyone has done this and it works a "yes its fine" will have me ordering on tomorrow.
oh, is it better to use a 10 speed chain or is it ok with a 9 speed one?
Ran a CdF with 10 speed chainset and 9 speed XT gears, perfect buttery changing.
Cross bike has a 10 speed chainset and 105 9 speed gearing, excelent.
Training bike has 9 speed chainset and 10 speed Ultegra, never been an issue.
Can I ask a favour.
When it doesn't work and IF you then take it to a LBS...please explain to them up front what you have done. Don't let them puzzle over it for 30 minutes to work it out.
Any LBS that can't spot the difference quickly aren't a shop I want to work on my bike.
It'll be fine.
^agrees with njee.

Just fitted a 10sp xt crank to my girlfriends otherwise shimano 9 sp bike. It changes gear sensationally well.
Absolutely no rubbing at all.
