Looking for a Shimano 10 speed compatible chain which hopefully might last longer than the original HG-X. Has anyone used a SRAM chain with the Shimano cassette?

Yep, didn't last any longer. Nor do KMC X10SLs, can't speak for the heavier KMCs.

Thinking of trying a Shimano SLX HG74, £19.99 from CR seems a good price.
