Shimanos 10 speed cranks all seem to run a 24 inner chain ring. Will I die if I fit a 22?

No. But most 10 speed cassettes have a 36 tooth low gear, and 24-36 is about the same ratio as 22-34 so is good enough for most riders. 22-36 might be useful on a 29er.
